(OT) ISP Rant/Search

by abaxaba (Hermit)
on May 24, 2002 at 21:09 UTC ( [id://169202]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Fellow Monks:

I'll protect the innocent -- but I gotta rant about my un-named webhost. Consider the following email transaction:

Abaxaba: Any chance for mod_perl or fast-cgi support in the future?

ISP: We do support mod_perl, but I am unsure as to what fast-cgi is.
To insure that you receive the correct answers, I would suggest contacting our technical support department, and give a brief description of fast-cgi.

Abaxaba: Any chance of having personal access to my domain's httpd.conf Apache configuration file? Other than .httaccess/.httpasswd, there is little configuration that I can do for my domain, esp. CGI $ENV's.

ISP: Under a shared hosting account, you will not have access to the httpd.conf file for Apache. To gain access, you will need to purchase a dedicated server.

My as-yet unanswered reply:

Abaxaba: Mod_perl requires modification to the httpd.conf file, including, but not limited to, the SetHandler and PerlHandler atributes. If I'm understanding your policies correctly, the only mod_perl support you offer is on a dedicated server, of which, there is no technical support??
Greater explanation to this issue is greatly appreciated.

So here's the deal. I've been with these cats for over three years, plus have referred other folks to them. I figure they've gotten about $1K from me, yet this is the kind of idiocy I have to deal with.

For $15.95/month, I get:

  • mySql 3.23.43 (4 databases allowed)
  • perl 5.6 (upgraded at my begging)
  • php4
  • jre -- despite their advertising a full jdk
  • 400Mb storage
  • 8Gb transfer/month
  • ssh/ftp/webcontrol
  • etc

  • I'm seriously considering taking my business elsewhere, and am seeking out some recommended ISP's. I'm looking for httpd.conf modification (for mod_perl), and full jdk, plus the other niceties that I already get.

Your wisdom, as always, is appreciated.

I'm getting extremely excellent service from Sprocket Data for the new http://www.stonehenge.com web host. They've got real open-source savvy people on staff 24x7, good connectivity, and remote power flick. I found out about them through a banner ad here, and thank goodness for that. I'm leasing a dedicated box from them, and run OpenBSD on the box for security reasons.

      Let'em know I sent ya.

I contacted Sprocket Data because of an advertisement on this site. I don't click banners much, but this one was attractive, and I couldn't believe one could offer a dedicated server for $35/month. But their site was clear (although it worked well only with a few browsers), and it explained the low cost. The cheapest dedicated server was a Pentium 133 with 64 MB ram, which still is overkill for simple web and e-mail hosting.

I didn't expect the small amount of money to buy me this service. I ordered one of their 133's, but because they were out of stock, I got a Pentium 166 at no additional charge. The operating system of my choice (Debian GNU/Linux, of course) came-preinstalled. Every e-mail I have sent them has been answered the same day, and I get weekly detailed bandwidth usage statistics.

17 days back (the current uptime is 17 days :), Sprocket Data needed to move my server. Other ISPs that I know would have done so with only an announcement. This ISP doesn't just announce, they asked if I thought the move was acceptable and waited for my reply before the actual relocation took place. The server was properly shut down (I gave them my root password), and the total downtime was less than 5 minutes. Now that's service!

I wish this kind of service was provided this cheap in .nl, because the ssh connection to .us is very laggy, and I like working remotely.

Currently, I have a vmware evaluation version running on the Pentium 133, and now I have two servers for the price of one. This allows me to try different server setups, and to play around with things.

Shared hosting is such a common need, and we've had a variety of experiences similar to yours from a variety of hosting companies over the years.

This seems like something we should hear more of on PM.

A few recent bits we've heard around our office are:

I've heard things about (but never used) Tier1Host: shared hosting, mod_perl, unlimited MySQL's, unmetered disk and bandwidth, unlimited sub-domains pointing to a directory, etc.

Have heard interesting (mod_perl) things about WebIntellects and CI Host; but I think I recall CI Host only allowing one MySQL database.

This came up under a short search I did some months ago but didn't pursue for other reasons: http://modperl-space.com/ (BareMetal.com)

      I'm sure you'll hear from others, but here's a small list of web hosting search engines or directories;

Surely there are many more decent hosts that other monks can recommend. I'd love to see a long list from others also.

I host my site (http://www.c4home.com and also http://www.e-vris.com) with http://www.webhosting.com. The package includes these features:
      • Virtula Host (not a dedicated server ;/ )
      • CGI/Perl
      • ASP
      • Microsoft FrontPage Extensions (or whatever the actual name is.. as I haven't use this feature much :)
      • ColdFusion (a real cool thing to have for raaaaapid development and deployment)
      • MS Access Database
      • Extensive site statistics etc.

and all this at a cost of around $75 (Canadian)/month. However, I'm anticipating to switch my database to Oracle and also aquire SSL, which supposedly would hicke up the rental cost a bit.

Having said that, however, I would not be willing to recommand my host to you. In fact, I'd rather look at picking another host myself. I would seriously consider a web host such as the Sprocket Data, for example.

However, in my case, I'll have to do a lot of code writing before I could accommodate such a move. Although, I did use a fair amount of Perl code in my current sites, about 80% of pages are coded in ColdFusion. Being a rather simple development environment (scripting language is vary easy to grasp), rewriting various pieces of functionality on my site in Perl would be a tough and time-consuming job to do. Unfortunately, I may not have a lot of time to devote to this cause and might have no other option but stick with my existing client.

Maybe it's just me and I don't know the market very well, but that seems like a pretty good value for $16/month. I do know that mod_perl vhosts are no treat to run for multiple sites, and at $16/month I'd have to guess your ISP's margins are too thin to provide this kind of customization.

One idea for ISPs supporting what you want: check out various software packages that use mod_perl, like Slash or Scoop, and scour their sites of friendly ISPs.

Surely at least one monk should mention our noble hosts, convieniently located on every page? Considering how cool they've been to the monastery I would at least check them out.
