New jobs section

Just a thought, but if we are going to allow posting of job advertisements, we should have a section just for that.

It is very disconcerting for my employer to walk by when I click on a link that I think is a discussion, but turns out to be a message from a recruiting type person.

I like my current job and I don't want to jeopardize it.

It is the first time I've noticed open recruiting on the site (Perl Jobs - the AM one, although the other is relevant as well, I guess) and I think its a bad direction for things to go in.
This has been discussed before in Employment Status, and I'm sure elsewhere as well.
IMHO, I think a jobs section should be created where people can look at these sort of posts if they want to (perhaps only visible via an option on the home node?). I don't really think that this is the correct forum for that sort of thing, but by creating an area for it the rest of the site will hopefully not be 'contaminated' by recruiters.

That was my point. If we are going to allow it, it needs to be in a section of its own. I am not particularly interested in coming here and having to wade through job posts to get to the perl data.

I agree, but the details of the implementation would be rather sticky. It would require a lot
of monitoring by Vroom and others to make sure that there isn't any abuse. I'm not quite sure
that is something that we can do right now. We can't just yank all posts with job in the title
because a while ago I posted a question in Perl Monks Discussion asking for tips on finding a
Perl job. So I don't know, maybe I am the start of this. :)
I don't have anything to add here, but wanted to add my voice.

I certainly think it should be allowed (if for no other reason than it will happen anyway :) ). It will work best if given it's own section. Vroom, since you aren't an employment site, I'm not worried about functionality. If they want a job database, there are lots of sites that do that. I'm thinking just a place where they can drop their message, and refer to it.

But do not allow the normal [ ] linking tricks to work. I would be concerned about people posting "answers" to questions that were merely links to their job posting.

Actually, would it be useful to make posting to the Jobs board unavailable to AMs? If you are going to post a job offer, then you must at least go through the steps of creating a user account.

Looking at the style of that job offer (the Anonymous Monk one), I fear that those job offers will need a link in large friendly letters combined with a How-To on the front page, as this node seems to have been written in a hurry without further thinking about linking the email address or providing any interesting information or web page - and it's exactly that kind of persons that are likely to spam ... But luckily, we have moderators here that will prevent such job offers from showing up on the front page.

I as a student/part time contractor am interested in (well made) offers (unlike that one), but I would also think that my contract partners don't want me going "job hunting" during paid hours, so I would also never want any job advertisements on the front page.

So I add my vote on "banning" job offers to the background of the site. Known people with an account here will also know whom to ask here or maybe ask in the chat or browse people's home nodes and /MSG them, and spamming Anonymous Monks won't get in the way of the general public.

I would think a Jobs Section would be overkill. There are plently of great resources on the web to find a job, and this site certainly doesn't need that functionality. As I am currently looking for a new job in an area I am relocating to, I can tell you that there are some good services out there.

Just my opinion, but the occasional ad may pop in, and can be deleted... but a section of the site to deal with jobs at this point would be too much. A link that says Perl Jobs which refers people to other sites (like monster.com, hotjobs.com, brainbuzz.com, jobs.perl.org, etc...) would be an OK idea. At some point I am planning to write something on the differences between the various job search sites, pros/cons, what type of replies each will give, what features they have, etc... (like hotjobs weeds out most headhunters, and brainbuzz let's you get very detailed about your skills).

    Cheers,
    KM

Your node comparing different jobsearch web sites is excellent idea. It is exactly in spirit of PM site: provide real-world information and insight, avoid marketing hype.

OTOH, maybe if Everything company can get paid for posting job offers, and payments will cover bandwidth so needed, this might be better than Offering plate.

I am thinking, if vroom can create some simple ad generator, which will generate simple ads about posted perl jobs into headers... Header should be unobtrusive, no blinking or stuff, just info. You are free not to read them. Or maybe as an option, ads can be removed for a buck a month, if you do not want them?

Surely ads counb be posted only in special section, by registered user only, and we can also grade them with reputation of sort...

... last thing I want to do is push ads down anybody's throat... Just an idea how to provide for web site hosting and vroom's rent, from member of PerlMonks Boosters' Club and huge fan of this community.

To make errors is human. But to make million errors per second, you need a computer.

I was thinking from a site usage standpoint. I don't want to log in and see tons of job postings. IF (Big IF) we are going to allow job postings, they need to be in their own section. Otherwise, they need to be killed.
