Found enlightenment in 1992 writing sw to replace VMS-specific FORTRAN code with something that would compile under AIX. sed and awk ran out of steam, but perl swooped in to save the day.
Strayed into C++ for awhile doing device driver work, now back to perl doing static web site development, database access, physics simulations, data analysis, and system administration.
