In your example, how do you distinguish between these?

You don't have to. Both mean:

  • No space with ++
  • A space on both sides of comparison operators (except for ==)
Valid ++ codes are:
++ <++ # These three ++> # have the <++> # same meaning
So with "++<", the less-than sign is always part of the expression that comes after ++.
