      Some very nice ones there ... I'll put them in round-robin for one of the panes, thanks :)

      Are the .jpg ones avaiable in some non-lossy format as well ? After having viewed too many of them, the artifacts really stand out, especially when used as backgrounds ...

      The link names are deceiving!

      I thought "image 1" was funny, and "image 16" cool looking.

      --
      perl -pe "s/\b;([st])/'\1/mg"

      I'd say, bad excessive use of plug-ins.. although image 18 is nice and stylish.

      I first used one of these as my wallpaper just over a year ago. After rebuilding my machine and loosing the image I have been on the hunt for them ever since. A chance find of an email in my archive has reunited me. ++silent11 (Now that I am able to vote!)
      cool!
      heh. 9 years later I find these images sitting on an old linux machine I'm about to decomm. the links to the above images have been broken for the better part of the last decade.
      these desktop images will now have a permanent home at:
      http://silent11.com/pm/

      While I'm not particularly fond of the images any more I had to provide the link to their new home just in case :)
      -silent11

        And they're as brilliant as ever, silent11! Thanks for re-hosting them, and bringing them to our attention again.

    What about those of us who hand craft our pics with vim? ;)
    static char * perl_xpm[] = { "23 09 3 1", " c None", ". c #FFFFFF", "+ c #000000", "....................++.", ".....................+.", ".++++...+++..+.++....+.", ".+...+.+...+.++..+...+.", ".+...+.++++..+.......+.", ".+...+.+.....+.......+.", ".++++...+++..+......+++", ".+.....................", ".+....................." };
      static char *

      what kind of perl is that?

      do this in perl, then it's cool.

      .
        It's his Perl C interpreter ofcourse.

    Un!x, from scratch
    Haven't got one, xpaint?
    Un!x, tweaking
    xv!!! God I love xv.
    Win32, from scratch
    Paint Shop Pro 4 (3 will do but it is lacking, most notably LFN support)
    Win32, tweaking
    LView Pro 1.D2 (the closest Win32 native to xv, yes you can run xv on NT but it's not the same)

    At some point PSP decided it should be Adobe, and Lview decided it should be PSP :-(.

    For sheer, pointless brutality, nothing beats programmatically generating code to programmatically generate your pixels using On-demand, single-pixel GIFs.

    Fave? Paint Shop Pro 5. Love it. Good schtuff.

    Perfectly powerful for screen-based images (desktops, websites, POVRay, etc). Medium strength on images destined for print media. Good for pixel shims, icons, screen captures; TWAIN support is respectable. Supports masks, alpha channels, layers, monitor gamma, color management, PhotoShop plugins, and so on. I've done some fantastic retouching with this app; clone brush be my friend.... It can split on CMYK/RGB colorspaces, and it can *join* on those colorspaces as well. Extensive support for a lot of image formats. Downside? The "picture-tube" feature introduced in PSP5, if you ask me, is rather useless; another "image creation for dummies" featurette. Whatever.

    All around, it's a good application (especially when compared to Paint Shop Pro 3).

    Hmmm. My favorite graphics creation tool is a pinhole camera and a scanner. Okay, I admit it: more likely to be a 35mm camera onto Photo CD. I suppose I'd use the GIMP after that, though, to make the image computer-useful. Then Illustrator for when text or nice looking printing is involved. I also really liked old versions of Painter for Mac OS.

    PhotoShop is my friend! Say it out loud and you will know it to be true.

    Many people I work with think that PaintShop is better than PhotoShop. But we know better than that, don't we?

    I usually do my graphics work on a PC so I haven't had a chance to do much with The Gimp. I hope to learn how to use it soon.

    photoshop, on a mac, is my favorite. painter is also really nice if you have a wacom tablet, but alas- it's not a poll choice. -- cat

    My digital camera (HP Photosmart 318, a christmas present from my parents and iPhoto, terribly slow on my beige 266 MHz PowerMac), and POVray (currently switching to MegaPOV since there was an OSX-Version available, transfer not completed.)

    My Favorite Graphics Creation Tool is our company's designer. It involves some IRL communication but the output is really worth it :-)

    use Company::Designer; my $request = Company::Designer->new(idea => "....", sketches => "....",); while (!$request->done) { drink_coffee(); } my $graphics = $request->output;

    Definately PSP 7. For what I like to do, Photoshop would just cost 500 more dollars, and would give me much more.

      You mean you pay for your software? ;)

      I've always been a big Photoshop and PSP fan, but I also have a copy of the Win32 port of The GIMP on my system because I really like some of the stuff it can do (image offsets to make tileable web backgrounds, for one)

    I used to be a huge photoshop fan... back in the ps5 days. ps6 is just too complex, it's the jack of all trades but master of none kind of program.

    I'm going to have to go with the gimp. anyone seen my gimp around?

    Is it bad to be on day 781 of your Paint Shop Pro 4 evaluation?

      It's worse than beeing on the 450th day of your evaluation of phtoshop Pro 5 evaluation or 200th of photoshop 6 ^_^

    I'm too cheap to go spend time and money on the decent graphics programs, so I use MS Paint. I don't use it much either, so I don't bother with it.

    FireWorks and DreamWeaver are two of the top three reasons my desktop machine boots into Windows (98lite). Vector graphics make me very happy, and the integration with DreamWeaver (almost all the graphics work I do is for web stuff) makes me even more happy.

    The third reason? CivIII, of course.

    ZBrush (so cool, I have to use an ice-scraper on my screen)
      I like the Flash 5 generator, Swish 2. It's much better than Flash itself

    Since the question was favorite graphics creation tool I'd have to say Corel Painter 7 and Corel Bryce 5. Now, had the question been about manipulation then Photoshop 6 would win hands down.
