Well, I'm the troll-provoker.
I must have done something wrong to have provoked two reaped abusive replies (out of only three direct replies so far.) I'm still a bit confused, but I think it's partly because I posted a long node without using <readmore> tags. That's fixed now, I hope.
I'm pretty new here, and just starting to find my way around. If I'm doing something wrong, I'd like to know about it so that I can stop doing it. Obviously I'd prefer not to get anonymously flamed, but I don't think I need to say that ;-)
For the most part I've felt very welcome here - many thanks.

Everyone is welcome here but like 1984 Animal Farm some are more welcome than others. The best thing about this place as opposed to other online forums is that the XP system encourages certain standards of community behaviour. Better still those standards represent the common consensus of the user base. Kind of like utopia was supposed to be....

Hi tachyon,
but like 1984 some are more welcome than others.
Sorry if this sounds pedantic, but I'm sure you mean 'Animal Farm', not '1984' :-)
cheers, and seasonal greetings to all

I've worked with a number of online communities, and have come to the conclusion that the main reason "trolls" exist is to gain some kind of satisfaction/energy/ego from the responses they can exite - regardless of the content of the response. In other words, any response to a troll is actually feeding them.
We have made it SOP to NEVER respond to a troll, even to say it is a troll, and to delete it if necessary. PM is great at ranking and deleting useless or distracting posts, but I notice an over abundance of responses discussing Troll posts. I bet the trolls would shrivel and die if they never received even a single response to their posts or even a discussion of how bad they are.
Of course it would be necessary to educate new users to this policy.

Should we expect a tutorial on the various attempts then? Say for $pathetic..$shameless unless $reaped or the like? Perhaps a sidebar on the baiting of trolls as well— are trolls catch and release?

Analysis of the categories of trolls
by Steve_p (Priest) on Dec 21, 2001 at 20:27 UTC

My thought has always been that trolls either come in three categories. The first are those that feel repressed or afraid to stick up for themselves in the real world and use the online world to let loose the venom that they are unable to release in the real world. The second are those that can't seem to handle the fact that others can post comments that are more original, intelligent, or funny than their posts. Finally, there are those that for some reason would rather not engage intelligent conversation on a site, and just bash whoever seems like the best target at the time. If anyone has any other thoughts on the categories of trolls, please add to the list. | [reply] |
