Starting Off Clean in 2002

Just over the horizon, the New Year is marching toward us, whether we want it to arrive or not. 2002 is now 2 weeks away.

How are you preparing for 2002? Do you have a "to do" list to help you start the year fresh? Things to do to jog yourself out of a rut? To finish that last little bit of unfinished 2001 business? Things to do "just because" end-of-year is as good a time as any? Perl-related physic burdens to unload?

What's on your list?

My list of things to do by year-end is

Install 5.6.1 on all of my computers, even the junkyard thing upstairs that only gets turned on ever few weeks.
Crack open each computer case, and blow out the dust.
Clean off my desktops, both real and virtual. There's too much clutter within reach, and too many things that I reach for often are just out of reach.
Box up old books to make room for new ones. Santa is supposed to bring a copy of davorg's Data Munging with Perl, and I need room for it.
Fix that one lingering web app that still doesn't use CGI;
Get my house off of the Silicon Valley "war driving" maps by configuring the wireless access point to not send an SSID. (Yeah, that might not be enough. Sigh.)
Upgrade the firewall to SSH2.
Defrag the drive on my laptop.
Catch up on full backups. (done)

My list (at least the things I'm willing to share ;-) is: Get version 0.5.0 of Net::Peep out the door. Submit a module called `DBIx::DAO` (a data access object that works with Oracle and MySQL) to the CPAN. It is battle tested and will make your life working with DBI so much easier with features such as a simplified (but not too simple!) wrapper to DBI, query profiling and execution timing, handle caching (perfect for mod_perl applications), multiple connect retries and full exception handling. Check it out when it's up. Submit a module called `Log::Simple` to the CPAN. Finish my dissertation. Install Ximian on all my Linux boxen. Ximian desktop rocks. I still build Apache, Perl, and some other things from source, but I just love Red Carpet for everything else. Install FreeBSD on my extra machine. Practice my saxophone at least 3 hours per week, no exceptions. Finish the play I wrote 60% of last year. Work hard, play hard.	[reply]

Vaguely Perl-related: Rack-mount all of my computers. Put together a new web box, stocked with Perlish goodness. Put (Free\|Open)BSD on all home boxen. Not at all Perl-related: Sort, and find room for, music collection. Play more guitar. `-- :wq`	[reply]

Here are my lists: Work (this batch is in order to be completed): Convert all of my company's programs to Perl; Quit my job; Find a new job using Perl, mySQL, & Linux. Personal: Find a new college for my master's program; Improve my Perl skills greatly; Publish a few more magazine articles. Oh, yeah! Have a lot more sex!	[reply]
