On which base CPAN does give away namespaces?

Hi people.
I'm a monk from when i started developing WWW::SMS and almost every problem i got developing it passed on these pages.
The same day i started discussing the module here, on comp.lang.perl.modules and started an opensource development effort. With the help of various monks i got a good job done.

In the meanwhile i asked for a CPAN account to put up the module. I was aware another similar module was already available so I told the author about my project.

Obtained the necessary CPAN userid i submitted for namespace and i got it. But surprise surprise, it was already assigned to AWRIGLEY, the author of Net::SMS::Web!!! He changed his namespace just after i noticed him (thinking I was doing the most correct thing) about my project!

So I asked modules@perl.org for advice but nobody seems to care.

Now I'm asking you wise monks: what am i to do? I put a lot of work in this project, i got an up and running website on sourceforge by that name. I wished the project to be in a CVS so everybody can help about it and i got it cause i think that's important.

I'm really disappointed by CPAN administrators and by AWRIGLEY: i thought Perl community to be much more loyal and helpful, just like i find perlmonks to be.

Any comment on the subject is welcome. Thank you.

Reading A Wrigley's request, it sounds like a simple misunderstanding to me. AWrigley is who you need to be talking to most. I'm really disappointed by CPAN administrators I see no reason for that. I'm not sure they've even acted on AWrigley's request yet and I don't see why you'd feel that they should know to treat that request unusually. I certainly don't expect them to mediate disputes over namespace "ownership" except in the rarest of cases. On a related note: Anyone care to elaborate on what "namespace ownership" does? Last I looked, it appears that "namespace ownership" simply has to do with "the module list" which has no binding connection to what is on CPAN (AFAICT) and is so out-of-sync as to be mostly useless (and largely replaced by things like http://search.cpan.org/ and Kobes' alternative). I haved tried to "play by the rules" with regard to registering in "the module list" and requesting comments on namespaces. But that doesn't appear to be working at all well and I now just concentrate on writing good code and documentation and getting it to CPAN. - tye (but my friends call me "Tye")	[reply]

Thanks for your advice. Sometimes it's just a matter of slow down and try to think not all the world is against you. AWRIGLEY didn't take a look at my code when i first sent it to him and in the meanwhile he get the suggestion for the namespace from another person. So AWRIGLEY didn't do what he had done on purpose but it was really a misunderstanding going on. Maybe sometimes i will obtain to upload my module to CPAN.	[reply]

I cannot give you much advice, but since you have sent your complaint on Mon, 19 Nov 2001 it seems to be fair to give the CPAN administrators some more time to answer your mail. Of course it is possible that your mail got overlooked and nobody read it. If you don't get any answer untill next Monday I would send another friendly mail with a more descriptive subject to modules@perl.org. Maybe a subject like "WWW::SMS namespace" was just overlooked and put into the backlog. The CPAN administrators are all volunteers who do there job very good. So give them just a little more time to work on there backlog. Hanamaki	[reply]
