in reply to Name Space

Like most adolescent Internet geeks, I started out using "cool" Fantasy nicknames, usually my favourite character from whatever series I'd read most recently. Of course, changing one's handle every month or so isn't precisely consistent. For a while, when I was just posting to course newsgroups at university, I was just using my real name. I'm not sure why I decided to change back to a handle for PerlMonks.

That said, "Foxtrot" and "Uniform" are military, aviation, or civilian radio words to represent the letters "F" and "U" over noisy radio connections (try distinguishing "dee" and "tee", or "em" and "en", over a staticy radio link sometime...). Predictably, they stand for "f*cked up" (hey, I have to grow old; I don't have to grow up!). While that describes me distressingly often, it's really taken from the title of a computer game I've been developing in my spare time, and I thought it would make a good moniker.

Near Annan, in SW Scotland, there's place called the Golf Hotel, and I've always wanted to go there with a girl called Juliet ask them to play a Tango. But the best news is that when I was in aid work I knew a lot of Finns, one of whom was called Karsten Lemni; so his call sign was Kilo Lima; but in Finnish, Lima, so I'm told, means "Phlegm". So I'm just saying, handle with care :)

When I was 16 and on one of my first solo flights,a falcon jet was sitting there - forever. I vividly remember it's tail numers 601SB. I was in this tin can for a plane being blown all over the place because I had nowhere to go. When I got on the radio asking if he was ready to go, I almost let out "601 Stupid B***h", it just rolled off the tounge easier.
