I agree totally with your vision of Windows: they are more closed than opened! In the 80's we had a cartoon in France called "Les Shadoks" which was a caricature of our thinking mode, and their main motto was: "Pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué ?" which would translate as something like "Why do it simple when you can do it complicated?". And that's absolutely what Windows® is: a gigantic nonsense.
