Sigh. It's been an expensive year. Last fall my 18 year-old dishwasher died, so I bought a replacement. $. In the spring, my venerable oil-burning furnace was condemned, so I made the change to gas and had a gas furnace installed in July. $$$$$$$$$$. In September, my 24 year-old fridge died, so I bought a replacement. $$. Last weekend, my 21 year-old hot water heater died; a replacement is coming this afternoon -- fortunately, that's covered because I rent the unit.

Of course, this poll talks about 'acquisitions' like it's a third red sports car .. I need these things to get by, especially hot water. Ever tried washing dishes with a kettle of boiling water and cold from the taps? It's pretty tricky. And 'showering' yesterday was quite entertaining -- never realized how much I appreciated having a quick hot shower to get myself started in the morning.

But I digress .. back to work, everyone! :)

That's not a bad run for your money.

I bet the replacements won't last as long as your originals!

I've heard that from a couple of folks. It's a little frustrating to think that with all of the scientific advances we still can't make an appliance that lasts 20-30 years. Then again, when the technician came to the house yesterday to look at the hot water heater, he checked the age and said "Replacement." right away. They're not going to spend any time repairing a 20+ year-old unit -- and that's fair. Presumably they can do a pile of recycling on the old unit.

Yes, we can - but we won't, because it's the economy.
You might be willing to pay more for a device with more longevity, but most buyers cope with a much shorter lifespan because they want to pay a little less.

Don't worry, be happy. All those appliances will pay for themselves in reduced energy consumption in short order.

The way forward always starts with a minimal test.
