Update: "Does FUD gleefully announcing the death of Perl and CPAN make the rounds??". for completeness, since confusion has already been demonstrated in the comments on noc announcement, cpan.org (linked above) isn't going anywhere, and already directs searches to Metacpan, has done for some time.

I've been deploying websites since the beginning and the cpan situation seems... odd.

Why just toss such an ancient, functional and valuable URI (it's worth millions of dollars!)?

Shouldn't it be the other way round, with whatever META means being replaced by SEARCH (in the url)?

Meta doesn't even look like CPAN.

Why even risk breaking so many incoming links?

It's such a bad idea I would pay to stop it. I can kick in five figures. Where do I send the check?

CPAN is not the front end here. CPAN is the collection of distributions in a central location. search.cpan.org is simply a method to access it. Besides, the most infrequent thing I do with CPAN is search it so the name is irrelevant to me. Also, I much prefer the look and feel of meta, and when someone enters a search link and I want to review the distribution, I manually review it on meta as opposed to clicking the link.

Right here. for $99,999, I guarantee you that within a month I will have the whole thing re-created ;)

Have you considered actually raising these issues with the people who are in a position to do respond with authority? 301s will result in search engine index entries being updated, over time. The redirects will have been tested (you could do this yourself if you wanted), so I don't think breakage is going to be a problem.

Never! Who would do all their homework? ☺

It's a lot of work and money to maintain and it's essentially duplicating/splitting the metacpan efforts in term of functionality. I think users are starting to vote with their feet as well so it's just better to do this earlier than later.

I was always grateful for search.cpan until metacpan got out of "beta." At this point search.cpan is just an irritant; being the first link(s) in search results. Personally, I'll be happy to see it out of the mix. I have not used it intentionally in years at this point.

I hope they remember to add a permanent redirect.
