I am talking only in jest. I've never shown any real animosity to PHP users as a set, though it baffles me how one can actually like such a thing. Of course, as an American, our Konzentrationslager for individuals of Japanese descent during the war were not Vernichtungslager, so this may make statements in jest like this easier.

True Concentration Camps and Extermination Camps are two different concepts, the Nazis used KZ as an euphemism to hide the true nature of what was happening in Auschwitz and Treblinka.

But concentration camps are horrible enough, the term was coined by the Britons during the Boer War in South Africa. (See also Spanish camps in Cuban independence wars)

The death rate there was around 20% and comparible to Dachau or some Sowjet Gulags.

I don't think the US internment camps for Japanese during WW2 come even close.

For US examples I'd rather look into the camps where Native Americans starved to death or atrocities in POW camps during civil war.*

Anyway if people nowadays use the term concentration camp they think extermination camp.

*) or the camps the US used in the Phillipines to quell the independence movement. I'd like to see serious investigation on this (or a Hollywood movie at least). Numbers for civil casualties in WP vary between 200000 and 1.5 million Phillipinos!

I of course did not mean to say that America has a (relatively) spotless record. I hope it wasn't taken that way.

        No, I didn't.

Just the other way round, comparing the relocation camps for Japanese is playing down the concentration camps.

They were a breach of civil rights, but people didn't die of hard labor, bad hygienic conditions, insufficient nutrition and epidemics.

What's fascinating here is that you just displayed a superior knowledge of US history than I think 99 Americans themselves, at best, could. What's embarrassing here is that I don' have a similar depth of knowledge of European history, etc. Though in my defense I will say I at least understand how much responsibility for the origin of this discussion topic the American blockades in the Pacific and the Treaty of Versailles bear.

        > What's embarrassing here is that I don' have a similar depth of knowledge of European history

History is a hobby of mine, spreading propaganda another... ;-)

Over 2 millennia of European history are far more complicated to grasp, for instance some things are only understood when you analyse how the Romans recruited their legions.

        > Treaty of Versailles bear.

Not sure what you mean, the problematic American role in Versailles was that they didn't play a role!

The German Empire asked for an armistice based on the Wilson plan only to find out that the US government had no say, except stupidly sending millions of fresh soldiers around.

One of the ironies of this story is that actually the same Germans "liberated" Poland, Ukraine and the Baltics by defeating Russia in 1917 ...
