in thread Terminal decline?

The difference is with fewer Monks, the vitriol is far more obvious. Especially in PMD. Like when Sundial responded in the thread about supporting HTTPS. It's been several months since I've been here, and seeing the pointless vitriol in that thread -- it feels like it's time to write PM off as a lost cause.

There was the hack attack and joke of a response, gods encouraging a troll for close to a year, and the BrowserUK vs. the gods incident. All of these leave a bad taste in my mouth and are clear indicators that leadership at the top is the biggest issue.

Sundial's presence doesn't help any either, but the users responding so negatively to his posts, even undermining legitimate posts like HTTPS highlight the real problem. And to make it worse, regular Monks are involved in this vitriol, including some with higher levels of access than most have, which once again highlights the lack of leadership.

BrowserUK, I know you have more invested in this site than most, but at this point the only realistic path forward is to create a new site or join a better (modern features, community that is growing) site.

I guess the fact that sundial continues to generate activity here, even when he isn't actively courting controversy, could be viewed as a boost to participation.

My informal gut feel is that his past activities underly about 50% of this week's posts in one way or another.

T'is sad to see the bones of this place picked over this way :( I truly miss it.

      There are two problem hypotheses
      • A "decline" of Perl
      • A "decline" of PM
To prove the latter we should compare the amount of Perl threads on other boards (especially SO) in the same time-frame.

I personally think the 90's interface of PM is not overly attractive for younger folks ...

Besides the snappier interface, performance, and deeper incentive system, there is also just no chance in Hell of a site like PM, that was never Internet popular even at its peak, competing with the foot traffic and visibility of SO/SE because it has unlimited topics and a family of more than 100 sites creating cross pollination and user stickiness. It's the best idea online since wikipedia. It's a shame it was socially engineered by [string of personality pejoratives only appropriate to 4chan redacted]. I can see its value. I cannot enjoy SO in particular. Some of the other SE sites entertain what comes close to actual discussion, humor, and original thought.

I don't care much about the fluff SD is producing, nor about his peculiar text emphasizes .

The problem is that SD is binding a lot of energy to correct his "advices", which are often enough plain dangerous.

The vitriol you observe is just self-defense in form of sarcasm.

I could link to at least 20 honourable regulars who repeatedly and politely told him to stop spreading cheap propaganda and asked for proof for his broad claims. All for vain.

    update

The fact that he threatened to sue the monastery is IMHO reason enough to ban him. This is a non-profit platform, we can only invite guests who are no danger to the others.

What is your proposed fix to this "lack of leadership"? Instituting a Zero-Tolerance policy towards intolerance?

This is far better than the comment on the same point I wrote and roundfiled. And the second try I wrote and treated similarly. And people say I have no self-restraint. If you are the user I believe you to be, you're missed (as a named monk). If not, nice impersonation!
