More on PerlMonks Stuff

by Zecho (Hermit)
on Oct 22, 2001 at 19:46 UTC ( [id://120561]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I know we already had a thread about PM logoed items, but this is a little different.

As my next contribution I am going to have some PerlMonks coffe mugs printed and donate them to the Monastery. They are ceramic mugs and will be both black and navy blue with gold print.

And now to the question. What would you like to see on them if they were by chance a permanent addition to the Buy Stuff page? As PerlMonks is rather logo deficient, (other than the textish logo) What should be added? Obviously the web address, but how about a slogan or something? Suggestions, comments, opinions etc. please. I would like to get started on it right away.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

    Possible slogans:
    • Use CODE tags!!!
    • Delete -- duplicate
    • Click the TALK button; don't refresh
    • merlyn has already written an article about this
    • The NodeReaper takes a sip of your coffee

    buckaduck

      I was wondering how we could link to the WebTechniques columns from the word 'article' printed on the mug. ;)

    Here we go -- what we need is a mug that looks something like this:
    | | | | | |--- |----| ) | |--- | | | |
    This mug is twice as large as a normal mug. You can put your [insert caffeinated beverage here] into the mug as it currently is -- or you can flip the mug over, and do the same thing.

    And of course, the slogan on the mug would read:

        There's more then one way to do it!

    • require Coffee ; Coffee->new() if $Coffee::empty ;
    • drink( $coffee ) or die ;
    • use Perlmonks ;
    • require Caffeine;
    • TMTOWTDI
    • Welcome to the Monastery
    • Seekers of Perl Wisdom
    • #! /usr/bin/perl -wT
      Heh, you forgot to add:
      sleep if $Coffee::decaf;
      .
      I like the require one or the Seekers.. one

    Of course just as I clicked submit, I thought "Just another Perl hacker," I don't know if that's ® or not, I do know that it has been attributed to merlyn.

    update:
    I suppose we can go by the highest rated reply as a guess to which people prefer.

    I don't know if you recall or not but bladx developed some icons for PM. Some links are here (composite gif) from his home node, here (html page) from his node Perlmonks Icons Pack 2 Out Now! and here (tar/gz) from his node PerlMonk Icon 12-pack finished!.

    I'm sure he spent a good deal of time on these and it would be nice to see that work rewarded. Of course should you decide to use one or more, you should get an approval from bladx (though I suspect he won't have a problem with it since it will benefit the Monastery).

    Whilst many of the suggestions already made are very very nice, I'd really like to see a big ol' shiny "pearl" on a mug, with $^X in the shiny spot. And just in case you're wondering, it's be real sweet if it was a "Black Pearl".

    • use strict or die;
    • use CGI or die;
    • what the $! ?
    • localtime all
    • print 'Good ', qw(night morning afternoon evening)[(localtime)[2]/6]; (acknowledgment to meowchow, who's elegant formulation this is)
    • Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister (or any of the other Monastery slogans)
    And I second the monk who wd like a mug with some carefully chosen obfu on it. And I applaud Zecho's public spiritedness.

    Well, it aint no coffee mug, but my co-worker suggested a Cat-O' Nine Tails with

    USE STRICT!

    branded on it . . . .
    . . . . hmmm, maybe not

      Something like: this or this perhaps?

    I'd like to see some of the more obfu code. Perhaps like camel code or The Stereogram.

    I also think it would be neat if there were code INSIDE the mug, but I doubt that's much of a possibility.

    I like both the slogan "Seekers of Perl Wisdom" and "use strict;" So why not "Use strict o seeker of Perl wisdom?"

    If you have a choice try printing these on large mugs, many of the standard sizes just arn't big enough for a good sized drink.

    Most of these are, or will be dups, but i have to get a few on here :
    1. I love the __END__ on the bottom idea
    2. Coffee nodelet
    3. use CGI;
    4. use stirct;
    5. CGI.pm is your friend
    6. Don't fear the (node) reaper
    7. something like this (shameless plug)
    8. fear my foo
    9. let us go worship the caffine shrine (maybe picture of Mr. Coffee ?)
    10. in vroom we trust

    i had a memory leak once, and it ruined my favorite shirt.

    How about
    use strict;
    use Perl;
    use Perlmonks;

    in one side, and

    You have 20 codes left today.
    You gained 1 experience point.
    you have 1E6 points until level hacker

    TIMTOWTDI() or die;
    JAPH() or croak;

    Some of these would be more appropriate as bumber stickers...
    • Perl: it's not just for breakfast anymore
    • bless($self, SLEEPY) unless ($caffeine)
    • My other car is a Perl interpreter
    • Strict is as strict does
    • Honk if you're using strict
    • Real monks slurp it

    Once you have the slogans use the voting booth to let the audience choose the best one.

    USE STRICT;

    Keep it simple..

    use PerlMonks.org;

    IMHO, an appropriate icon/logo would be a camel in a robe or a camel's face wearing a hood (looking like a monk), looking straight ahead or a slight angle to the left. A nice B&W drawing... maybe a monestary in the far background.. wish I could draw...
