Wikipedia is not exactly a canonical or even reliable reference source, since among other things it is open to ongoing change by people with opinions and agendas important enough to them to become "editors" there. For example the article you linked to opens with the statement that Perl is not what you think, but rather a "family of languages."
(Elsewhere Wikipedia also states that notPerl6 is the "sixth major version of the Perl programming language" ... while the first article calls it "a separate language" ...) (heh, but it lists #cbstream as one of the Perl IRC channels.)
The way forward always starts with a minimal test.
