Did you ask O'Reilly if they could provide one? There might be demand that they are not aware of, and "publishing an eBook costs them nothing." Surely they have the XML files lying around there someplace . . .

No, how is this best done?

    Update

To be honest I doubt just talking to an official phone contact will simply lead to an instant eBook publication.

    update

I wouldn't be surprised if posting here is the most efficient way to contact "them".

I agree with the AM - contacting O'Reilly does seem like the best option here. Alternatively take your German copy out of Germany and do some scanning ... but that's not scaleable either.
As I understand it, O'Reilly ceased publishing true eBooks, only the "Safari" online version seems to be available. I don't understand how they're working really; Oreilly.fr closed doors in 2008, and since then none of the many French O'Reilly books are available, in any form. Not even eBooks (which they must have the rights for, and the files somewhere). Go figure...
A few months ago, a friend of mine and I tried to ask O'Reilly Media whether it would be possible to publish the French Perl/TK O'Reilly book (out of print) for free on a developer community Web site. O'Reilly answered that they would not mind, but that we would first need to obtain the agreement from the author and from the translator. We haven't been able to get an answer from the translator so far. (It's a pity, since I know personally the translators of all the French O'Reilly books related to Perl, except for that particular book.)

So we haven't been successful yet, but it seems to show that it might be possible.

@ LanX: you might want to try to contact O'Reilly Media (especially if you happen to know how to contact the translator of the German PBP).

Well they do now publish ebooks, they even offer a "O'Reilly-Plus" membership for 10€ per year which allows to download DRM free PDF copies for up to 10 printed books one acquired.

I'll try to call them in the next days.

        > Oreilly.fr closed doors in 2008,

        Désolé! :-/
