A Few Impressions from Amsterdam

I was originally going to post something else for my 1000th node, but I'll save that for later, since I think this is fitting: As many of you probably know, The Perl Conference in Amsterdam ended on Friday. It was my first Perl event, and a great experience! I was very happy to finally meet some of you in person, choroba, LanX, Corion, Tux, Laurent_R, and rurban, and I'm really sorry I didn't get to say bye properly since I had to leave a bit early. If I met some of you but haven't yet matched you to a username, I apologize and drop me a /msg.

I enjoyed the talks by some of the greats like TimToady, TheDamian, Ovid, and brian_d_foy, some of which are already available as videos on Facebook (Update: and YouTube, thanks Corion), and I hear the full videos should be online within a month or so. For my favorite funny moment of the conference: First, watch Damian Conway's talk "Three Little Words", definitely worth it on its own (as is checking out the impressive PPR), and then go to the Lighting Talks from Aug 10th and skip ahead to around 1h39m15s in the video... :-) (or with better quality on slides & audio, this link)

Update: Added direct links to the YouTube videos.

Update 2: Some pictures can be found at http://twitter.com/TPCiA. Also updated links to YouTube.

Update 3: Updated video links to higher-quality versions

Andrew Shitov also has uploaded his videos to Youtube.

These were shot from his (stabilized) mobile phone. Expect the videos with proper sound and proper cameras to be uploaded "within the next four weeks" as Sawyer said.

Tried Larry's keynote from them facebook videos, dinn' understand sh... hell. The quality is so mean that a simple equilizer doesn't do the job for me. Maybe it's just me for being a deaf old fart, but then... we are perl programmers to make things fit and the world a better place. Or something else artistic.

    Thanks for the post.

    perl -le'print map{pack c,($-++?1:13)+ord}split//,ESEL'
The videos are done by volunteers, next time just come!

      :p LanX

The videos above are unofficial videos, and even though I was there, I still want to watch some of the videos. As the conference had three tracks of talks, sometimes I couldn't be in two rooms at once.

    > First, watch Damian Conway's talk "Three Little Words",

For a better quality see the already available version from YAPC::NA Three Little Words which comes with the slides blended in. (unfortunately the screen/seats height relation was suboptimal in Amsterdam˛)

I just was finally able to watch it, it's really nice (though I'm not sure if/how PPR is able to parse syntax which was changed by use of prototyped subs)*

    Have fun! :)

    PS:

    > I was very happy to finally meet some of you in person, choroba, LanX, ...

Likewise, haukex ! I was very positively surprised when choroba introduced you to me! =)

    Updates

*) I think the phrase "At least as good as PPI" said it already ... ˛) I'm expect blended in slides in the real videos, since the laptops where connected to something like a grabber device.

I'm coming a bit late to the party, but I was also very happy to meet you, haukex, as well as choroba and corion, for the first time, and also LanX, Tux, and some others again.
