You certainly don’t need to guess who in particular is being “talked about” here, and I do appreciate someone out there actually saying a few kind words on my behalf.

Unfortunately, some forums – including this one – do support “down”-voting as well as “up.”   (Some forums, such as the StackExchange family, actually go farther than this, allowing you to rewrite someone else’s post.)   This is a personal decision of the site ownership that, fortunately, is not shared by every forum out there.   (I happen to think that only up-voting should be supported, or, if both are allowed, the tallies should be displayed separately instead of being summed.   As for myself, I give away upvotes freely, and never downvote.)

To me, down-voting ... which can become an outright vendetta ... tends to take attention away from what is supposed to be the mutual subject (helping other people with Perl questions) and focuses it upon the participants, themselves.   PerlMonks’s capability to have an Anonymous Monk who can actually post things also gives vindictive people the ability to conceal their moves and to protect their precious-to-them experience point count.

However, is PM ever going to change in this regard?   I doubt it.   Quite clearly, some people like it this way.   And, PM is still the best source of information on the Internet concerning this topic, in spite of all of the hostility.

And, while I appreciate the sentiments that are expressed here, “we are here to talk about Perl, not about each other.”   As hostile as this site sometimes is, I never want to see here what I often see on StackExchange sites:   brand-new posts from brand-new users who get negative votes within the first thirty seconds of their having been posted, and for no good reason at all.   (Are they gonna let the doorway hit them in the butt as they walk out?)   Anyone, and everyone, should be made to feel welcome here, and encouraged to participate without fear of ... reprisal.

Now, hurry up and read this reply before it gets down-voted off the planet, and reaped.   I fully expect it.   And, I do not care.
