How many monitors do you use while coding:

    • None of them - I don't code.
    • 0 - Ticker-tape is a purer representation of a Turing Machine.
    • 1 - A laptop screen or single monitor desktop workstation. Frills are for wussies.
    • 1 - And it's cracked. Yes, I like practicing my trade while laying on a bed of nails, too. (You know who you are.)
    • 2 - The standard dev kit suits me fine (so says management).
    • 3 - Our systems are so interconnected and API's unwieldy that fewer than three monitors wouldn't present enough insight into what I'm working on.
    • 4 - Everyone else has two or three. I'm not like everyone else.
    • 5 - This configuration reminds me of the 1987 5-cylinder VW Passat my parents let me drive in high school.
    • 6 - I saw such a thing on the Internet, and had to have it.
    • 7 - I need all the luck I can get, for this code to work.
    • 8 - Because my power strip had eight outlets available.
    • 9 - A 3x3 monitor array was the the most I was able to fit into my Faraday shielded SHTF headquarters (known to the rest of the world as my mom's basement).
    • More than nine - And most of them are just displaying graphs and mock code designed to make the boss think I'm actually doing something critical, and so complex that he couldn't hope to comprehend, so he won't bother asking.

    Dave

Do you know how raccoons can be so slick at surviving?

1-and it is cracked: because it works and so far, my job doesn't require that much mocking up.

Marie Curie for the shiny stuff
Marie would sometimes sleep with a little jar of radium, gently glowing in the dark next to her bed - a reward for the hard labour of extracting it from pitchblende during the day. Radium was once added to toothpaste and other products for its supposed curative powers.

Four years after her husband Pierre died (after slipping while crossing the road, one of the wheels of a heavy horse-drawn cart ran over his head), a huge scandal erupted in France when Marie became involved in a torrid love affair with a former student Paul Langevin, who was married with four children. To defend Marie's honour, Langevin challenged a newspaper editor to a duel, though no shots were fired. In an attempt to calm the situation, Einstein argued that "despite her passionate nature, she is not attractive enough to represent a threat to anyone".

Cool. And i didn't know that Hedy Lamar was also an inventor.

BTW, doesn't her name sounds like a character from some novel by Raymond Chandler?

Hedy Lamar: "You're not very tall are you?" Philip Marlowe: "Well, I, uh, I try to be".

Holy cats. I usually hate these poll things but this one is tight.

        Holy cats
Erwin Schrödinger for cruelty to cats

      A couple more:

      • Albert Einstein for publishing a wedding contract from hell paper to his first wife.
      • Albert Einstein for being a courageous pacifist (one of only three scientists to sign "An appeal to Europeans" pacifist counter-manifesto in response to the earlier "Appeal to the Civilized World" militarist manifesto (signed by 93) in 1914).
      • J Robert Oppenheimer for leading the top secret Manhattan project despite it being widely known that he'd been a member of just about every Communist Front organization on the West Coast.

        Very interesting.

But i'm not so sure about Oppenheimer. He was granted absolution - or better: he was rehabilitated by Lyndon Johnson, right?

What programming language do you hate the most?

    Context.

    • Assembly
    • C
    • Cobol
    • C#

    • Fortran
    • Go
    • Haskell

        SQL

Hate SQL?! Surely you jest. SQL is one of the few small and beautiful languages. Misunderstood by many because it is set based instead of linear, though. Which is perhaps why most programmers should not just assume they can write good SQL, because they are thinking abut it the wrong way.

If it can be classed as a language, Awk!

I've never been able to get my head around it, which is why Perl came in so handy :-)

      Cheers,

      JohnGG

Not only is awk a language, but it is Turing-complete. It's hard to imagine that there would ever have been a Perl without awk and I still use it frequently (although almost exclusively for very short scripts these days).

      • Bad language
      • English
      • Perl 6
      • Powershell
      • Unixish Shell Scripting languages

      edited to add:

      • Ada
      • Pascal

As with the SO "article," my question is: "what qualifies one to give an opinion about a given language?" I'm rather certain that the vast majority of SO users who said they "hate" Perl are not Perl programmers ...

The events link is giving me an error (can't establish connection) and for cpan i used cpan instead of metacpan. I just happened to remember the shortcut for it offhand. Unless you think it makes a real difference.

Re: poll ideas quest 2017 (food packaging)
by chacham (Prior) on Mar 26, 2017 at 20:34 UTC

The best packaging for food is:

    • Edible
    • Plastic
    • Reusable
    • Cardboard
    • Recyclable
    • Biodegradable
    • A Brown Paper Bag
    • No Package

Vacuum sealed. Not only does it keep longer, but if you want to defrost something relatively small, you can put it in a bath of warm (not hot - you'll cook it) water and speed the process up dramatically.

      Regards,

      John Davies

Nice idea. But i am looking more for the packaging, rather than the method. I'm curious what our fellow monks think about it.

    Preferred Web Framework:

I've never used any of them (never had to do web stuff, way out of my league), but I've flirted with the idea of doing a simple web based interface for scripts I've written in the past and I've always been curious about relative use rates by Monks here.

I'd probably come up with a great plan to prove that I'm myself, do something stupid while trying to implement it, and instantly recognize my style.

If this happens to Randall Munroe, his identity would probably be confirmed before he was done explaining how he would prove his identity.

Re: poll ideas quest 2017 (calcuate month)
by chacham (Prior) on May 26, 2017 at 14:30 UTC

The best way to calculate the end of the current month in a piece of code is:

    • Hardcode the numbers
    • Use a module or function
    • Add a month, and subtract the current day
    • Add a month, truncate the day, and subtract 1
    • Add 1 to the day, test it's legality, and loop until it fails
    • Use a default of 30.4 days (30.4167, 30.4375, or 30.43729167)
    • Use 28 days for every month and ignore any days that come that
    • Issue an update (nearly) every month to fix it for the current month

The best part of a chicken to eat is a…

    • breast
    • leg
    • wing
    • neck
    • other body part
    • nothing
      • thigh
      • brains :)

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

I think the thigh is part of the leg. But I am not a butcher and this is not butchering advice.

Re: poll ideas quest 2017 (everything internet)
by chacham (Prior) on Jul 24, 2017 at 20:29 UTC

    Everything on the Internet is:

    • Backed-up
    • Citable
    • Downloadable
    • Free
    • Googleable
    • NSA-filtered
    • Other
    • Pirated
    • Questionable
    • Silly
    • True
    • Useless
    • Virus infected
    • Well known

      - filtered for your security by the NSA

They didn't want me to put that down, but now that it's out in the open...

    • Not necessarily on the web

        Is that covered by googleable?

Re: poll ideas quest 2017 (rather have)
by chacham (Prior) on Aug 15, 2017 at 06:02 UTC

    I would rather have:

    • One good one
    • Two medicore ones
    • Three bad ones
    • Other
      • no naughty one
      perl -le'print map{pack c,($-++?1:13)+ord}split//,ESEL'

a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it

That makes me wonder. Which came first, the eraser, the umbrella, or the gun?

    • Make noise
    • Are Nearby
    • Roll
    • Slide
    • Spin
    • Spring
    • Swing
