Are you using tests? If not, I suspect it's a better "next step" than OO, as it's more transferable. At the London Perl Workshop, I think last year, I attended a talk about code problems and one of them was using OO when it's actually harmful. The speaker gave some strong examples. But I've never heard of tests being decried.

Likewise, are you using version control? If not git, then SVN or something else. Again, this is a transferable skill.

If the project you are planning will be easier with OO, then please don't take this to indicate that you shouldn't.
