I just re-ran this entire thing and couldn't replicate.
My setup is:
- GNU Emacs 25.1.50.8 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.20.6
- mode-compile-version is "2.29"
- cperl-version is "6.2"
