Programming doesn't exist in a vacuum. Don't discount the vast amount of domain knowledge that has to be acquired and mastered and reacquired and remastered over the course of your career. This is in addition to the easy part of learning several assembly languages, Fortran, C, C++, Perl, OS APIs, Database APIs, Networking APIs, Window managers, human factors...
