Best Nodes with negative reputation

by Athanasius (Archbishop)
on Mar 14, 2016 at 05:36 UTC ( [id://1157615]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

As I write this (Monday, 14th March, 2016, at 01:23:32 EDT [15:23 EST — my time]) the last two nodes featured in “Best Nodes of the Day” at Best Nodes are in negative reputation: -1 and -2, the latter for a node which has already been reaped.

I think this reflects poorly on the Monastery; in any case, it is at odds with the behaviour of Worst Nodes, which never shows nodes whose reputation is zero or positive. (Currently, there are only two nodes showing in “Worst Nodes of the Day.”)

Although this situation is rare (the nodes in negative reputation disappeared while I was completing this post!), I think it would be worth fixing.

Update: Removed redundant “2016” from the date.

Thanks,

Athanasius <°(((><contra mundum Iustus alius egestas vitae, eros Piratica,

Are you saying that at one point we had only 8 positive nodes in the last 24h or are you describing a bug?

Yes, it's that sad. Perl + GPW + weekend :-(

      Update: GPW linkified.

I just made a patch which I believe should take care of this. Per my idea, it sets a minimum node rep limit ($NORM/2), which as of today means we shouldn't see any "best" nodes with a rep less than about 5 or 6. Please let me know if it didn't work. :-)

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.

Excellent! Thank you so much for watching keenly!

I noticed that too, and the post with rep of (-1) was a simple question that had been downvoted for some reason. I think downvoting a question should be done even more sparingly than an answer; think about how the seeker would feel if he saw no answers plus a downvote on his question.

The way forward always starts with a minimal test.
think about how the seeker would feel
I think for a new user a downvote would translate to "you are not welcome here" or even "you are an idiot". Much better to simply explain in a comment what the problem is, as many of the helpful and patient monks do, but there is obviously the odd grump lurking.
That's why singular downvotes are hidden behind a (no significant downvotes) display.

I believe that is true when you look at the node, but will not affect the rep displayed in Best and Worst nodes.

The way forward always starts with a minimal test.
If the node has received more downvotes than upvotes, it will still show a negative reputation, even if the numbers of votes in each direction are hidden.

Huh, interesting... But, as others said, it was a weekend. Maybe "Best Nodes" should have a lower xp bound, but it's not critical I think.

But I misread this - I thought you were looking for the best nodes ever which had a negative rep (in error). That would be an interesting exercise :)

I'm not sure but it seems that nodes are only included after they've been voted on, such that neutral nodes are omitted.

That is nodes with 0 votes are only shown when up and downs happened and equalized.

But showing neutral nodes should soften this effect considerably.. .

      Update

      improved wording

Could you write a patch? TIA...

Most questions are downvoted, think about that

Yes, I have been thinking about it. I wish more questions, especially from newish monks, would receive upvotes even if the post quality is low; only getting downvoted for unambiguous rudeness or demands for code, etc. XP resonates with new users which can turn them into long term users and new questions are generally good for the monastery; even poor questions can receive illuminating answers.

personally I always check the post history (+ my vote history) before downvoting an "unknown" monk.
