A virus warning while updating the local minicpan directory

vagabonding electron has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi all

I apologize in advance if this is a false alarm. I tried to post this in chatterbox but nobody replied.

I get the virus warning while updating my local minicpan directory on http://cpansearch.perl.org/src/RJBS/Mail-DeliveryStatus-BounceParser-1.542/t/corpus/ . It concerns the file virus-caused-multiple-weird-reports.msg . I thought it might be a false alarm - looking at the name of the message - however I never had this warning before.

It says Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.bf is found. Does anybody get this warning too?

Disclaimer: I never used this module, nor have I a computer science background to try to dive into the analysis of this file. I just thought it could be important.

I downloaded the mentioned file, and using clamAV (Linux), I also get a virus warning, so yes. Normal:

    free@beer~$ clamscan virus-caused-multiple-weird-reports.msg virus-caused-multiple-weird-reports.msg: Worm.Mytob.LC FOUND ----------- SCAN SUMMARY ----------- Known viruses: 4289294 Engine version: 0.98.7 Scanned directories: 0 Scanned files: 1 Infected files: 1 Data scanned: 0.05 MB Data read: 0.07 MB (ratio 0.72:1) Time: 7.149 sec (0 m 7 s)

And although it is false alarm: Thanks for taking the time to post it. Stay alert.

I had an issue with a module on mini-cpan which itself is parsing for viruses.

In consequence this meant this module had to include snippets from that virus for identification.

Some Anti-Virus-Scanners will just take offence on the existence of such snippets.

Please note: I didn't investigate the module you mentioned.

Isn't this what the EICAR test file is supposed to be used for?
