I would recommend taking a look at Elements of Programming with Perl. I haven't read it but I've thumbed through it and heard really good comments from others. There's a review of it here. I would recommend avoiding the oft mentioned Camel book since it's a bit much for a newbie. Once you've got a year or so of perl programming under your belt you'll definitely want to get a copy though!
