People like to think they're more important than they are. Read through the responses and you'll see, the majority of crap people make computers do is nonsense. Remind you to pay your bills? Isn't that what a calendar and a pen is for? If the world ended tomorrow, how useful do you think programming would be with no electricity? It wouldn't be. Not at all. Build an engine. Hell, build a table. THOSE are useful skills.
