Writers Block

on Sep 13, 2001 at 04:02 UTC ( [id://112068]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

It is hard for me to talk about Perl again after all that has happend with the WTC and other events. But lately I (and maybe some other monks here,) have been having some Perl "writer's block" trying to think up cool, or useful Perl scripts.

What if there was a section of some such that people could put up ideas that they would like to see done in Perl for a script, but perhaps they don't have enough time to do it themselves.

This way, young and old Perl programmers alike could get some great ideas from a melting pot of ideas in a section like this. Or perhaps this discussion section could simply be used for this purpose, (but I would rather try to get a new section for this purpose ...)

Anyways, I would think this would help and encourage creative growth especially for newer programmers that (like me,) have recently learned how to use Perl to program *well*, and simply need some incentive for using it.

If on the rare occasions I get bored, I get ideas from two places.
    1. What do I really hate having to repeatedly do at work? Can I find a way to automate it?
    2. If I am really bored and want to look at new stuff, I search the monestary. I skim through several monks home nodes, and then look for interesting posts that look like they answer questions. I will then trace through the thread and see if I can write what was originally asked, if I can't its a learning exercise. If I can write it, I try to figure out why they suggested doing it that way.

I think would be good unless it were abused by homework assigners...but really I don't think of it as something essential. What you could do is create some sort of message board so people could post their ideas on what else to code. Isn't that strange...get projects to code via a project... ;)

I understand what you mean, damian1301 about homework (ab)users, because it especially around that time of the year with a new school year starting for most students that would try to use it for this. I would hope that they wouldn't use it for this, since this was completely not my intention with this idea. Thanks for bringing it up.

I also know that it isn't completely essential, but could be something possibly to do in the future, if there is ever time to do so. Maybe something to think about later on.

For now, that message board idea might be a good idea, perhaps I can work on putting one up for this purpose, unless anyone else would like to do this, or even simply help out, that would be great!

update: in fact, I could even just continue to ask for random programming ideas in the CB if this doesn't ever happen.

Well - you could chuck suggestions in the Cool Uses For Perl. That seems like it'd be appropriate to me.

I've got a few ideas at the moment but what I really need is time. If anyone has any spare feel free to post it :-) Oh, talent would help too...

Well... I am, too, suffering from this 'Writers Block' (in my opinion it's better written as Coders Block, but that's just me and my strange opinions heh...)
In fact, I even have a some spare time (actually not just 'some') and I would really appreciate any suggestions, 'cause at least while I'm coding the boredom seems to disappears, but it's kinda hard to code with an empty mind.
When I get really desperate I ask some of my non-programmers friends to give me some suggestions but usually none of them are doable... but since we're all perl coders here, this wouldn't happen.
So... if anyone has any suggestions, /msg me at will. :)
