I went through the survey yesterday and I thought the site's methodology was rather questionable. By showing the "most popular so far" responses first, it obviously drives more votes to those responses, while responses which aren't in the Top N (For, I think, N = 8? I didn't pay that close of attention to the chunk size.) aren't displayed at all unless you explicitly request to "see more".
With results that will be so clearly biased by the survey structure itself (even without considering the content of the responses), it really only seems suitable for "fun", "random" polls, not for any kind of serious data-gathering which might be used to influence the policy or direction of worldwide communities or an organization which (somewhat controversially) attempts to guide them. | [reply] |

Looks like it got nuked already. I've yet to see anything stating that this was officially endorsed by TPF, however I'm sceptical of that, having read the Ts&Cs, which was the end of my engagement with the site.

While the poll was open, it stated that the results would be presented next week at TPRCIC, so it may have been "concluded as planned" rather than nuked.
I don't recall whether it directly claimed to be endorsed or supported by TPF, but it seemed clear to me that the intent was to provide insight into what "the community" thinks TPF should do (even if TPF may not have requested that information).
I guess we'll just have to wait until next week and see whether this gets mentioned at the conference at all, or if it sinks into (well-deserved) obscurity.

This is supposedly coordinated with TPF, but I don't find a corresponding news post by TPF.

It really is an extremely unfortunate name. It is impossible to take it seriously. Did one of the founders ask a random four-year-old for name ideas?

hmm that idea of "phrase tags" is either good or very very bad - it certainly drives into certain conclusions. word-tags would have been more appropriate i think.

Just noticed a recent TPF Finding a shared vision of Perl post,
which seems to indicate that TPF endorsed the Gobby survey
(see the "Our Methodology" section of the TPF post).
I've quoted the relevant section of this post below:
Being at an early stage, this research is exploratory. We presented a series of seed questions and used the innovative Gobby platform
for participants to share their own thoughts on what needs to be addressed.
These seed questions were:
- What’s your connection with Perl and its ecosystem?
- What do you see as the Perl ecosystem’s core values and initiatives?
- What are your future aspirations for Perl?
- What do you perceive are the main challenges of unifying the Perl community, culture, and governance with a shared vision?
- As an individual, how might you support Perl in the future?
- How could Perl community groups contribute to our long term goals?
- How can The Perl Foundation help the community achieve their long term goals?
One of the interesting features of Gobby is that participants can vote for other peoples' responses with the effect of moving them higher up
the list when viewed by the next participants. However, the number of votes should not be used as part of a quantitative analysis because:
- one person could have filled the survey in multiple times;
- many statements could have multiple interpretations; and
- the most insightful statement may have been added by the last person filling in the survey
The survey results can be seen from a link in the TPF post.
