Double-duty on that last parenthesis. It's both a closing parenthesis and the mouth of the smiley. Are you allowed to do that?

When putting a smiley right before a closing parenthesis, do you:

Use two parentheses: (Like this: :) )
Use one parenthesis: (Like this: :)
Reverse direction of the smiley: (Like this: (: )

FWIW, i first wondered this in 2002, with a post including, "I can remember having this debate back on BBSs." I think it's about time the knowledgeable monks of our monastery weighed in on the matter. :)

possible additions:

replace outer parens with -- .
use code tags around the smiley.
use angle brackets (square brackets, etc) instead of parens.
use C-style commenting to set the smiley off from the closing paren.
make the smiley a dunce: (:> .
I disapprove of emoticons.
