Do you have any data to back up the claim that they are no longer maintained, to any bigger extent than other modules? I'd say this is a superstition.

Tiny and simple modules do have, sort of by design, a better chance to reach stability than the average module, and thus may need less maintenance. That's why they will remain relevant, in particular if you bundle them with an application.
