The subscription is for extras and support. The core project Dada Mail is actually GPL.
I've actually used it before and it's not bad. There are other mailing list packages written in Perl, too.

I have used that piece of software about or almost 20 years ago, I did not even remember about it until I saw you mentioning it here. I did not know (or at least did not remember at all) it was written in Perl. Well, at the time, I am not really sure I even knew what Perl was (or maybe I had heard the name and vaguely knew it was an obscure scripting language, but certainly not more than that). I guess it worked probably because Perl was pre-installed on my Slackware Linux distribution of the time. I had no idea that this thing still existed.
