in reply to Name Space

Since Erudil's visits here are brief and few, I'll answer for the meaning behind his name. It comes from JRR Tolkien's languages in "Lord of the Rings", and is Quenya for "servant (-(n)dil) of God (Eru)".

My own nick stems from "JAPH", in lowercase. I chose it when I was 17, and since there are people greater than myself who deserve the name "japh", I chose "japhy", to convey the sense of a young'un (which is what the "y" stands for). I won't be young forever, but I think I'll stick with this nick.

    In addition, I always thought that Jeff and japhy sounded quite similar. Prove:

    use Text::Soundex; $\="\n"; print soundex 'Jeff'; print soundex 'japhy';

    Are you sure of Erudil's etymology?
    I have The Languages of Tolkien's Middle Earth by Ruth Noel, Houghton Mifflin Company. This book contains an English-to-Elvish glossary. This glossary contains no entry for "servant". On the other hand, page 81, there is the entry:

    friend (n)dil, (n)dur, nil, nur, S mellon.

    So I think Erudil is rather God's friend, not His servant. The meaning is rather different.

      The meaning is more familial than "servant", but the suffix (n)dil implies strong devotion. I have the Silmarillion backing me on this one. It's somewhere between "friend" and "servant"... a word that escapes me at the moment.

        The word is simple: Sam. And you know you can trust me :)

    I am a fairly dark-minded person, that is, not given to light and cheeriness. Back when I first needed a signon I decided to do a little research to find something I liked.

    xenchu comes from the Japanese word zenchu. Zenchu is the swordcut used by the second to dispatch a samurai commiting seppuku. I changed the first letter because I wanted the nickname to be unique and I like x better than z.
