Jim,

The thing to consider in determining how useful this site is, is not just the number of users or how many are logged on at any one time. Rather, consider the "signal to noise" ratio. You will find on this site some of the most knowledgeable Perl people in the world. People who are truly "gods" of the Perl language.

I doubt you would find such a concentrated and dedicated group of Perl experts anywhere else.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

You could of course also take IRC on (for example) irc.rhizomatic.net. There you can find #perl and #perl-help. But PerlMonks is without any doubt the best resource you can find.
