in thread Having our anonymous cake and eating it too

This may be difficult to see as valid or accept but this social cop stuff is actually a social problem for many of the rest of us. You can consider that a personal attack if you like. You, however, compared anyone who disagrees with you to segregation apologists. Pretty heavy smear. Being in the minority does not necessarily equal the right nor the avant garde. Every, every, every thing under the sun is a problem to someone, and ever shall it be. That women are allowed to post here is a "social problem" to quite a lot of the world. Your complaints are not so heinous, obviously, but I don’t personally find most of this anonymity issue any more valid and your implication that anyone who disagrees is less fair-minded is uncool.

Thought police posts put one’s own feelings first, elevate one’s point of view as morally superior, and in this case exclude obvious and sane critique: namely that anonymity changes nothing. If you don’t think so, go browse the racism, ignorance, hatred, and threats of youtube and yahoo comments (and Huffington Post while we’re on historical point) for a couple of hours where every user is signed in with an account. There is no faster path to “I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.”

We exchange expertise here. That’s the value. There is zero value and quite a bit of harm in changing that mission to one of: we treat each other with complete equity and the lowest common denominator of pablumized international etiquette and then maybe the perl. Or else! You seem like a nice person. I am too. Let’s keep doing that and get back to code.

I appreciate the outreach, and I understand you're trying to explain why you think it all went so sideways, and smooth it all over, but I think we've already burnt that bridge, salted the ashes, and nuked the site from orbit.

I'm sorry that there seems to be no way to find common ground between my personal principles, and those of the majority here. (I did not force my views on anyone. The "cop" remark was inappropriate.) As such, I can't continue to participate here without either making compromises I can't live with, or dealing with hostility every time we disagree.

Life's too short to hang around places I know will upset me. See you at conferences, maybe.

Or you could hang out here, but stay away from the "meta". Or are you saying that the site's imperfections make it morally intolerable for you?

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.
I'm saying that there are certain users who I can't interact with in a fruitful way who are in a position of at least perceived power, and that having to self-police to avoid inflaming them outweighs the value I get for participating. I apologize for the late reply. I logged in to make it easier to look up some old threads.
