[Slightly OT?]: p5p, perlbug and rt.perl.org

by marto (Cardinal)
on Jan 02, 2014 at 10:15 UTC ( [id://1068932]=perlquestion: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

marto has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Recently I've made a couple of minor changes and submitted patches via perlbug@perl.org. The auto responder perlbug-followup@perl.org then lets me know a ticket has been opened and provides a link to it at https://rt.perl.org. When I log in here with my Bitcard account (which I created purely to access rt.perl.org, it uses the same address that I post to perlbug@perl.org from) it lists no tickets associated with my account, either open or closed, when I search for the ticket by number the response is:

No permission to display that ticket No details

If anyone can shed any light on this please let me know, especially if I've missed something which is clearly documented.

Currently my only way of interacting is by responding is via the mailing list thread, which brings me to my second issue. I appreciate that the list is moderated, and that the volume of messages requiring approval is probably quite high. I've sent responses which don't get approved until after others have replied or acted. In one instance a second patch I submitted didn't make it to the list until after someone else fixed an issue.

Previously I had a normal (non digest) subscription to p5p for a short time, but found that the volume of mails I received was too high given my current limited free time (infant twins, other responsibilities) I unsubscribed. In the interest of contributing and not causing others rework (or wasting my time by submitting a patch with is no longer needed by the time moderation allows it to appear), would a digest subscription to p5p negate the need for my posts to be moderated?

Thanks

Update: Fixed typo, added Bitcard hyperlink.

I think I've found both of your tickets, which, when logged in, I can see. So the question there is - what email account is your bitcard associated with? Your gmail account? (Mine is connected to my cpan account which has made things easier when changing email addresses - just had to point the cpan.org bounce to the new email address and everything continued to work as before.) Just double check that. (Since you've not posted identifying information, I won't post any, either.)

As to how to interact - just reply to the emails in your email client (whether that's gmail or your IMAP client or whatever). As long as you leave the subject alone, it should get routed correctly. You don't need to sign up for the p5p mailing list, though I've found it handy in the past. (I'm currently sitting with 885 unread emails in that folder, so, um, I'm a bit behind.)

And I've not been able to figure out how emails in the list work. There's something asynchronous going on - how can someone respond to your email prior to moderation accepting it so that they can receive it and respond? :) I've seen responses to others' emails where I don't receive the original post for a day or three after I receive the response. Time travel does exist, at least on the p5p mailing list!

Tanktalus, thank you for your reply.

As stated my Bitcard account uses the same email address I used to post to p5p. When multiple people are involved in a thread and I reply to one of them, it doesn't get posted to the list until after moderation, so rather than time travel or people responding to post I've made without my mail being displayed. Perhaps I didn't explain that as well as I should.

I have asked perl5-porters-help@perl.org to clarify my suspicion that membership (even digest) negates the moderation step. I'll also raise the question with the Bitcard admins. Once I have confirmation either way I'll update the thread. Thanks again.

When I log in here with my Bitcard account ...

You can also log in with your PAUSE account username and password, can't you ?
At least, I've always been able to log in to rt using my PAUSE username and password, and have consequently not concerned myself with setting up a bitcard account.

Mind you, I'm not suggesting that you necessarily *ought* to use your PAUSE account to log in to rt ... merely wondering whether using the PAUSE account provides the mileage you seek.

    Cheers,
    Rob

      Rob, thanks for your reply.

When I visit http://rt.perl.org I don't see an option to log in with anything other than Bitcard:

      Have a Bitcard account?

Log in with it now or get a Bitcard account."

      There's also a note saying:

"We have switched to using Bitcard directly for authentication."

When I visit http://rt.perl.org I don't see an option to log in with anything other than Bitcard

        Duh !! ... my mistake ... it's rt.cpan.org that offers the option.

        Cheers,
        Rob
