[OT] Call to arms for mathematicians:(Update: please ignore!)

by BrowserUk (Patriarch)
on Jul 10, 2013 at 15:03 UTC ( [id://1043486]=perlquestion: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

BrowserUk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I need to implement (in perl) the second formula in Lemma 6.3 of this paper.

As normal with this kind of paper the notation goes right over my head, so can anyone out there translate it into English for me?

Update: It seems I was the subject of a practical joke by one of my correspondents. My apologies to this forum.

That's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. After showing this thread, the "paper" and link from above, even my 13 year old son was laughing hysterically over the description of mathgen.pl

      Awesome, just awesome.

      -Scott

        It gets even funnier.

The paper was accepted for publication by a Advances in Pure Mathematics.

So, whilst I'm somewhat embarrassed that I bothered this forum with it, I'm not embarrassed for not having recognised it for what it is.

      Well spotted !

    Yikes!

I'm no mathematician, but I've found this website helpful in the past, but that was for much simpler equations. I'm afraid yours is way out of my league!

Out of curiosity, I'd love to see the final product!

    Best of luck!

I wasn't even aware that that notation *existed*. Consider me humbled!

Out of curiosity, why are you in this situation? That is, why are you tasked with implementing a formula you cannot understand?

has this "paper" ever been published and if yes: where?

Considering that this formule includes "infinity to the power of minus seven", a straightforward way to produce the same result would be 0/0.

That would be the first formula from Lemma 6.3.

I love the lead-in to that equation:
One can easily see that if Sj; is not greater than l then...

Ignore something so chucklesome? I should cocoa! If you want your revenge, what about presenting your "correspondent" with an invoice from a "supplier" for investigating the equation? I could organise one for you, if you're prepared to give a snail or e mail address (dropbox via /msg acceptable). Valid business details & VAT number can be included for added verisimilitude. I'd ask you to suggest the amount, as you will know best how much will maximise revenge while retaining credibility. If you go down this route, with or without my assistance, do let us know what happened.

    Regards,

    John Davies
