Can't decide whether it 3 or 4 for me. We cruised the Caribbean aboard the QEII some years ago, and went ashore on many of the islands include Jamaica, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad. But are any of those "South America"?
We also went up and had breakfast one morning moored off the coast from Caracas, with the awesome backdrop of the mountains peaking out of wraps of clouds, above the rather industrial scene of Catia La Mar. But we had had a heavy night, and decided against going ashore. (From the returnees accounts, we didn't miss much.)

If you were off the coast of Caracas, you were anchored on the continental shelf. For the purposes of this poll I'd say that's close enough. :-)

Thats why I asked for a clarification here.
different school systems, different eras, different definitions ...
E.g. I still had a single American continent in school.
And some weeks ago I met a tourist from Moscow in Berlin talking about how much she enjoys her "first trip" to Europe!
( And should the Kazakh football team really be a member of UEFA? =)

You know what
I'm old enough to be educated in an old soviet school. We there distinguished a so-called 'parts of the world' (as a cultural term) from 'continents' (as a geophysical term).
So there is 'America' as a 'part' but not 'continent' and also a 'New World' contained both Americas and Australia +New Zealand -- this is also a 'part of the World' -- a sociocultural term. The same for 'Europe', 'Middle Asia', 'Middle East'. And there were only 6 continents out there. Easy enough.
But I've asked my daughter and guess what? Now they're learn in a different manner, now they have all the 7 continents (with separate Europe and Asia). Things are more complicated than I thought before =)

Look, the source of the classification is Greece and their perspective.
They knew the Mediterranean area and the Black and the Red Sea,
but things like Ural were out of scope.
It's pretty much impossible to have a logical definition which is acceptable for the masses...
