Mega XP ?..?

WTF is a 'Mega XP'?

This message has greeted me every time I've visited this website for the past two years, and the string 'Mega XP' is noplace on the poll ideas page.

I guess I'm just too stupid to figure out how to make the regular or 'super' search forms search for 'Mega XP' as a single string rather than returning results containing "Mega" and "XP", but in poring over results I see that "mega XP" seems to mean something like "lots and lots and lots of eXperience Points"??

Or maybe it doesn't. In any case no, I'm not especially dying to have them, I've no hopes so feel free to dash them, and I like a good non-sequiter as much as the next Nerd/Geek so maybe I'll visit the poll page again. Someday.

No, 'XP' is two letters. '3' , '5.918287271' , '-7' , now *those* things are examples of what we commonly call 'numbers'. Absent 'context', that is (and Perl is all about context, isn't it?). You've got yours, I've got mine, and now (after considerable effort) mine actually includes some glimmer of your contextual notion of 'Mega XP'. I think.

With Mega- being the prefix for millions, it is clear that Vroom is the only monk to have actually received a MegaXP point. Everyone else had their hopes dashed when they offered poll ideas.	[reply]

The discussion that provided an explanation took place in the Chatterbox 2.5 years ago. Now your hopes of ever finding an answer will be dashed as well. Seriously though: XP = Experience Points -- those little things that we accumlate as our posts are upvoted, and fret about as our posts are downvoted. In the end, they mostly just signify how much time we've spent procrastinating our real $work. Mega XP would be a whole lot of the virtual stuff. And since the pollsters aren't able to hand out XP gifts, if you ever did have hopes of poll quest submissions inflating your XP your hopes will be dashed. If I recall (it's been too long since I've set up a poll) pollsters do have the option of attributing a poll to you, the submitter. When that happens, you will see some XP (or loss thereof if the poll is negatively received), but not much. Dave	[reply]

WTF is a 'Mega XP'? Politics. A promise set up to lure you into thinking about something to vote about, and then voting. But things go on as if there hadn't been any idea of voting in the first place. Perhaps this Mega XP thingy is one of the most persistent expressions of old-fashioned irony on PerlMonks. Can I change my original post after there have been replies to it and everything? smile ... yes, you can fix the title of any post of your make. The titles of replies will remain as they are and where they are. Changing the title will not change the node id of your post nor force the system to make up a new thread. The "fix that!" wasn't meant that serious... :-)	[reply]

I wrote a patch to remove it last december. My unwritten argument was that the monastery can be confusing enough to a newbie without unnecessary banners. There are no longer any new quests posted, and the poll ideas quest concerns only a few monks and they can find it from How do I create a Poll?, we should not advertise this quest with a banner on the front page. Corion has applied the patch when as a reaction to this thread I have pointed out that the banner can actually confuse monks.	[reply]
