in reply to IO::Uncompress::Gunzip to scalar takes hours (on windows)

Running Strawberry Perl v5.16.2 on Windows 7 64bit with 4GB RAM, unzipping a 290MB file took less than 15 seconds.

While your system is running the slow gunzip, is your CPU busy? Is your disk (swap file) busy?

The CPU is busy, but disk activity and swap is low.

I would try upgrading perl and/or relevant modules, then the OS to solve or at least isolate the problem.

I've upgraded to the latest version of IO::Uncompress::Gunzip available on CPAN and continue to see the problem. I'm using 32-bit activestate perl 5.8.9 along with a variety of modules (some rather old) for a production tool.

The plan is to upgrade to a more recent version of perl and required modules, but the time to do that and get things tested has not been forthcoming. However, I expect this will solve the problem.
