Or do you leave a large amount of them unspent? That's what I do. It's been quite some time since I last spent all of my votes. Voting just for the sake of voting is a useless exercise. Perl 6 - the future is here, just unevenly distributed	[reply]

I usually visit Best Nodes, and from there, Selected Best Nodes. I look for something interesting and/or uplifting to read; that means I usually find a good spot to spend my daily votes. Yes, but isn't just looking in Best Nodes following herd mentality? If any of my proposed solutions have minor errors, it's because I don't waste my genius on trivial matters. :-P	[reply]

Yes, I leave a large amount of my votes unspent. But that's not the full story. Sometimes I specifically read random old nodes, because there are so many hidden gems, and in that case I can spend votes on these. Also, sometimes I read old nodes of a particular monk, with the intent of voting on most of them.	[reply]

I concur with ambrus! The very few times I decidedly want to spend votes rather than primarily educate myself on a specific topic, here's what I do: I look up some longwinded thread on Recently Active Threads and read it through, voting on the latest post's of monks that haven't given up trying to lighten up the path for the OP. I feel those helpful monks are kind of heroic and deserve some recognition - but alas! - buried down in the threads very few people will notice their work. Cheers, Sören	[reply]

Be careful what you wish for. Around here, XP is a lot like wealth in many societies. Use some of the excess to downvote bad nodes; i.e., the "gimme, cuz I faked my knowledge of perl to get my job';" the homework nodes; the self-contradictory nodes (for exceptionally bad cases); and the nodes with content that boils down to a spec (possibly deficient) and a statement to the general effect that "my code doesn't work." Then spend some time clearly explaining why the node falls short of the standards suggested in the various FAQs. Some consider this bad advice because downvoting bad nodes "might hurt the little darling's sense of self-worth" or might discourage a noobie, among others. The noonbie argument may have some value, so instead of downvoting the first-timer who appears to HAVE MADE AN EFFORT TO FOLLOW OUR GUIDELINES, explain, clearly and gently, how to improve the node so that it does satisfy our guidelines --- does provide the code, data and spec that we need to actually be helpful. If you didn't program your executable by toggling in binary, it wasn't really programming!	[reply]

Even at a moderate level they're mostly useless. If you have some time and want to improve the site, you could search among the really old nodes for things to upvote, since a lot of the best content here is quite old. Not that I know an easy way to do this... Just another Perler interested in Algol Programming.	[reply]

On the typical day, I tend to leave 80-90% of my votes unspent. I vote to reflect my perception of a node's value, not to pad out my xp.	[reply]

I’ve got about 13,000 experience-points and they do feel warm and fuzzy, but I have no idea what to use them for. I will scatter positive votes like the Ghost of Christmas Present, but I (almost) never cast negative ones. But that’s just me. Good posts, clever humor (here ’ya go, LanX ...). On a typical day, I cast at-most one or two upvotes, and (almost) never cast downvotes. I do mark truly-inappropriate (antisocial ...) or mis-filed posts for “consideration” from time to time. I generally do not have or take the time to cook-up a complete, working Perl program extemporaneously in response to a question, which practice around here is an XP-magnet and deservedly so. I only recently discovered the existence of Orders and belong to none of them.	[reply]
