Lots of votes with nowhere to go :-)

by space_monk (Chaplain)
on Apr 22, 2013 at 17:29 UTC ( [id://1029933]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

As one ascends the lofty heights of Monkdom, one gets more and more votes to use, and there is an incentive in using your votes as it helps to increase your own experience.

However, one does not necessarily see nodes that are worth using all your votes on, so I ask what do those of you who do have lots of votes use them on? Or do you leave a large amount of them unspent?

If any of my proposed solutions have minor errors, it's because I don't waste my genius on trivial matters. :-P

I usually visit Best Nodes, and from there, Selected Best Nodes. I look for something interesting and/or uplifting to read; that means I usually find a good spot to spend my daily votes.

Yes, but isn't just looking in Best Nodes following herd mentality?

Yes, I leave a large amount of my votes unspent.

But that's not the full story. Sometimes I specifically read random old nodes, because there are so many hidden gems, and in that case I can spend votes on these. Also, sometimes I read old nodes of a particular monk, with the intent of voting on most of them.

PS: Wouldn't help increase your reputation... but if you're sad about wasting votes, pay tribute to the elders ... ;-)

    I concur with ambrus!

The very few times I decidedly want to spend votes rather than primarily educate myself on a specific topic, here's what I do:
I look up some longwinded thread on Recently Active Threads and read it through, voting on the latest post's of monks that haven't given up trying to lighten up the path for the OP.
I feel those helpful monks are kind of heroic and deserve some recognition - but alas! - buried down in the threads very few people will notice their work.

    Cheers, Sören

It is a subtle mind trick to encourage one to see the good things in more nodes. But it doesn't work on most people.

The subtle mind trick seems to have worked on me...I must have been an Imperial Stormtrooper in a previous existence A Long Time Ago.... ;-P

Subtlety doesn’t work on most people? Shocked, I am!

But is it Jedi, or Vulcan?

Be careful what you wish for.

Around here, XP is a lot like wealth in many societies.

Whilst you're struggling to acquire a little, the masses are usually quite encouraging, but as soon as you've acquired more than they have, the jealousy sets in and your acquisition of it will always be attributed to some kind of underhand dealing or another, rather than the dint of hard work.

With the rise and rise of 'Social' network sites: 'Computers are making people easier to use everyday'
Examine what is said, not who speaks -- Silence betokens consent -- Love the truth but pardon error.
"Science is about questioning the status quo. Questioning authority".
In the absence of evidence, opinion is indistinguishable from prejudice.

It strikes me as rather odd to hear you say that, Your Emminence.   There is, I believe, no higher XP rating than “Pope,” and there is only one way to get there:

      Bribery.

;-)   Ahh, I do but jest.   Congratulations.   I mean that.

Use some of the excess to downvote bad nodes; i.e., the "gimme, cuz I faked my knowledge of perl to get my job';" the homework nodes; the self-contradictory nodes (for exceptionally bad cases); and the nodes with content that boils down to a spec (possibly deficient) and a statement to the general effect that "my code doesn't work." Then spend some time clearly explaining why the node falls short of the standards suggested in the various FAQs.

Some consider this bad advice because downvoting bad nodes "might hurt the little darling's sense of self-worth" or might discourage a noobie, among others.

The noonbie argument may have some value, so instead of downvoting the first-timer who appears to HAVE MADE AN EFFORT TO FOLLOW OUR GUIDELINES, explain, clearly and gently, how to improve the node so that it does satisfy our guidelines --- does provide the code, data and spec that we need to actually be helpful.

If you didn't program your executable by toggling in binary, it wasn't really programming!

    Hello space_monk,

I guess you hope that someone (like you) asks a good question like you did, and then you can give ++ to a lot of good monks.

Thank you and keep asking good questions...Ed

    Strange nobody mentioned till now...

...these nodes merit every single vote!

Even at a moderate level they're mostly useless. If you have some time and want to improve the site, you could search among the really old nodes for things to upvote, since a lot of the best content here is quite old. Not that I know an easy way to do this...

I go through and upvote everybody who comments on my posts because obviously they're spending time on worthwhile nodes and I want to reward that :-)
That's very good of you so I've upvoted yours :-)
If you spot any bugs in my solutions, it's because I've deliberately left them in as an exercise for the reader! :-)

On the typical day, I tend to leave 80-90% of my votes unspent. I vote to reflect my perception of a node's value, not to pad out my xp.

I’ve got about 13,000 experience-points and they do feel warm and fuzzy, but I have no idea what to use them for.   I will scatter positive votes like the Ghost of Christmas Present, but I (almost) never cast negative ones.   But that’s just me.

Good posts, clever humor (here ’ya go, LanX ...).   But no hot flaming objects.

On a typical day, I cast at-most one or two upvotes, and (almost) never cast downvotes.   I do mark truly-inappropriate (antisocial ...) or mis-filed posts for “consideration” from time to time.

I generally do not have or take the time to cook-up a complete, working Perl program extemporaneously in response to a question, which practice around here is an XP-magnet and deservedly so.   I only recently discovered the existence of Orders and belong to none of them.
