XKCD references Perl!

I'm not sure if this qualifies as "news", per se, but I think it's worth noting that today's XKCD comic references Perl.

    Yeah I think it's news.

But from all XKCDs which reference Perl this is for me the hardest to understand the pun.

Perl is equivalent to using regex? What is "jay"?

Or is the supposed message that only an older generation wearing thick glasses uses Perl and there explanations are as cryptic as this strip?

    ... must be.

    Cheers Rolf

        Thanks, thats clearer!

        So song-jokes with s/girl/perl/g ...

        ...hmm ... want some more?

Part of the joke is that it alludes to the well-known adage,

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll use regular expressions." Now they have two problems.
