I would be in favour of some redesign but that doesn't look any better.

At the very least we should lose the hokey Monk Pics from the banner. We also have some nicer themes that we could use rather then the default (very) dark blue.

Settings Nodelet:  Display Settings -> Theme Configuration -> Monk Pictures off: -> check.

    :-)

(But I would miss them if they weren’t there.)

Yes I know. :-) I have that setting on for years and I also use the Red Theme so PerlMonks looks fine for me.

In fact I'd completely forgotten about those monk images until I saw them in the linked article.

I still think they should be off by default though. They look amateurish. But perhaps that is the look we are going for.

Yeah, I've had them off for many years myself.

I propose that we turn them off for Anonymous Monk. That way the site will look less hokey for casual visitors. Once you join, the hokey pictures will show up and then you can decide whether you want to keep them or not.

Also, no changes for existing users (whether they had customized this particular setting yet or not).

        Good idea? Any major objections?

        On purpose
