In Kung Fu, there are many ways to the one true path: Dragon Style, White Crane Style, Tiger Style, Monkey Style, Drunken Style, Drunken Monkey Style, etc.
This is complemented by Northern and Southern styles of both, and then Eastern and Western within Northern and Southern.
And then further extended by various weapons that you can use.
Kung Foo is about knowing the techniques and having the skills to handle any situation thrown at you. It is about acting with speed and power and accuracy, in any situation, in any environment, at any time.

I post in the style of the misinformed-code-monkey sometimes.
I really am never going to ask my Parents for a book on Martial Arts again,
they go and buy them from those bargain book shops, they have as much
authenticity as the works of Tuesday Lobsang Rampa.

Very true. It comes down to a matter of style. All are effective, but you need to recognize strentghs and weaknesses within systems. An example of this might be Taichi tends to be very circluar, but wing chun is very linear, always working off of the center line. As a result, a taichi practicioner who has studied taichi only, tends to get his butt rocked. Unfortunately, in martial arts as well as Perl, people start saying "My style better than your style" and sooner than later, "Uncle" is whining because the temple got burned and now you as the eldest must go and take revenge. Fortunately, Perlmonks, while not above squabling over fine points, appears to be dedicated to the maxum of "There is more than one way to do it" We must be wary of getting too entrenched in our own stule. I reciently read a posting that stated that other programmers when shown something new, say "that's cool" and ignore it, regardless of how much better it would improve their code. What happened to "Absorb what is useful" (Bruce Lee)? In Japan, warriors were encouraged to go out and spar with people from other schools to hone their techniques. In a way, that is what happens at Perlmonks.

As far as I remember Kung-fu means 'improvement' or 'skill trough training' what can best describe the goal of most of the perlmonks ?

Actually, I see a fascinating parallel between the martial arts and Perl. I used to study Kung-fu many years ago and was getting rather decent at it (but ask me about the scar on my upper lip sometime). In the course of studying, I continuously heard students of many disciplines say something like: "our art is about realizing that you don't need to fight." Well, that's all well and good, but those same students would often follow-up with something like "my /sifu|sensei|instructor|whatever/ can kick your instructor's @$$."
Can you say "missing the point", boys and girls? I knew you could.
In perl, we so often hear "there is more than one way to do it"... so long as that way is Perl.

I'm agree with Ovid.Martial Art and Perl sometimes or mostly alike.The skills that you learn during the Martial Art can be applied to the programming too.Although I don't learn Kung Fu,I practise Silat which is famous in my country,Malaysia.The feeling I got when succeeding accomplishing any part of silat such as summersault ,back summersault etc is the same when I have succeed to solve the problem in Perl.
The main thing I like Perl is because I feel the total power control of it.Although I realizes that there are many programming languages which are more practical,faster and easier to use etc,but there are the power feel when I use Perl.It mainly because,Perl is free and does not been control by any other organization or company,unlike other languages nowaday.In my final year project,I would like to use Perl,C,C++ and Linux to do my thesis.
In Silat ,our sifu is called Mahaguru,in Perl,the sifu is Larry Wall.
There are many things you can explore what your body can do when you practise Martial Art although it is just your finger.It's the same as you can do may things with Perl languages although it is just a dot.
The powerful weapon in Silat is keris which is the uniqueness of Silat.In perl,the most powerful features is REGEX which is the the things that most distinguish Perl than other languages.There are also many types of Silat such as the Tiger style,Dragon style,Eagle style etc.
If you do one wrong step during Silat practising,you may get injury especially when practising with weapons.In Perl,if you manipulate the syntax carelessly,you may end up figuring 'hey,where is my perl directory?', especially when you doing things with rm,cp,mv etc.But,there are many ways to overcome such problems.
My conclusion is most Martial Arts in this world is also TMTOWTDI like Perl.
