Homework Alert!

by mirod (Canon)
on Oct 11, 2000 at 23:24 UTC ( [id://36295]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Would something like this be useful, maybe in the FAQ?

Your question seems to be a homework assignment:

  • answering it requires very little Perl knowledge, using perldoc (the documentation that comes with every Perl installation) or reading any Perl book would give you the answer faster than asking this community

  • the problem you are describing does not seem to be a real-life one but more something a teacher would write

Answering homework is not something that Perl Monks often do. It would cheat you of a chance to learn, your teacher of a chance to teach and evaluate you, and your fellow students of chance to be fairly compared to you.

Plus you should be aware that your teacher might also be reading your post, and the answers, and might identify you. Many schools penalties for cheating include expulsion.

So if your problem is a real one please post some more explanation about it, and you will get help here. Otherwise type perldoc perldoc or man perldoc if you are on a Unix system, use the Perl Help if you are using the Activestate port on a Windows machine, or grab a Perl Book, Learning Perl, Programming Perl or Elements of Programming with Perl are probably adequate for you.

Quick note: if you've set up your PATH right on Win32 you can type:
    perldoc perldoc
At a cmd ( or 'command' ) prompt and get similar results.

Active State does this for you, if you compile Perl yourself or get another binary ( mod_perl/Perl/Apache/Open SSL for example ) you may have to do this yourself... big wup!

I'd add a reference to the search &&/|| Super Search (the question has probably already been answered here, perhaps using TIME::Warp) , but otherwise it covers the ground nicely I think.

I still think this or something like it should appear on the submit form for anonmonks though. Someone who posts a FAQ is not likely to look at the FAQ first unless they've at least been made aware of it.

I like this idea. Quick, everyone, logout and have a look at the bottom of Seekers of Perl Wisdom and see how small and missable the links to the FAQ are.

If they were a little bigger, and up above (or even between) the submit boxes, it could improve things. ('HEY Bozo! Your code will look like yucko unless you follow THESE RULES!')

If you are really desperate, the perl docs are also online, thanks to CPAN. The first place you should look is the Perl FAQ which will help on a remarkable number of homework questions.
