Announcing "Other Users" stats (Are you addicted to PM?)

by blokhead (Monsignor)
on Nov 13, 2006 at 15:23 UTC ( [id://583727]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

A few weeks ago in the CB, someone made a comment about their height in the listing of Other Users in the chatterbox. It gave me the idea of keeping statistics on such things. My original goal was simply to have a mechanism to keep track of my relative height in Other Users. But since I had to fetch and store all that Other Users information, I realized I could keep track of a few other things as well. Most notably, how much time everyone has spent logged into PM over the last week. Scary, I know!

So without further ado, I present Perlmonks addicts statistics. I hope it's a nice complement to mojotoad's CB stats. It will eventually keep track of a 7-day window of data, but the buffer currently has only ~2 days in it. If there is great interest, I could post the code, but it's something quick-n-dirty I just threw together this weekend -- I'd have to clean it up first.

Some technical notes: The scraper fetches the Other Users XML ticker every 3 minutes (to my knowledge, this is the window of time for which you will appear in Other Users), and if you are seen at that time, you are credited with 3 minutes of time on Perlmonks. Obviously it doesn't see cloaked users or compensate for those of you who never turn off your chatterbox client. And right now, it processes the entire dataset for each page request. So if the site gets hammered, I'll have to institute some sort of caching (like the CB stats).

Please send me a message if you'd like to be excluded from these stats (alternatively, cloak yourself).

    Nice job, blokhead,

And I'm happy to report that I'm not addicted to Perlmonks.  I'm only #25 (waaaay off the chart), and besides, I can quit Perlmonks any time I want to.

In fact, I can go for up to 8 or 9 hours a night without logging in once!

I find this quite amusing since I havent been around much at all. Just running FPC in the background. :-) So take these stats with a grain of salt people.

I find this quite amusing since you are the first reply to this node, evidently not around much at all ;-)

      Cheers,
      R.

I stop in briefly every hour or couple of hours when I'm online, but compared to some time ago I'm barely here. My stats were due to the fact I was using an uncloaked fullpage chat and forgot it in the background. Which makes me think it might not be a bad idea to exempt the fetch tickers and fpc fetching from login. HMM. Except then how to tell that you have a fetcher running somewhere you have forgotten? Something I've done more than once. :-)

    All I can say is:

Thank heaven for cloaking. If not for that, surely friends, family, concerned authorities, someone would have scheduled an intervention by now...

You might want to remove im2 from the list, since it's just a bot. ...or its owners might want to cloak it.

In case anyone cares, this statistics page was broken for a few months, since my website was moved to a new server. You would have seen the same statistics over and over again, as the crawler was failing to crawl the other users XML and update its buffer. I finally got around to noticing and fixing it. The buffer will take a week to fill, then the frightening look at reality will recommence.

After a webserver transfer, the stats were down for a while. I have now fixed the problem. I'm not sure if it was collecting data from perlmonks correctly, but if not the buffer will soon be refilled with fresh samples.

Wow, I like this stats. Specially I like being able to see where I am down the list. Thanks!

However, I was surprised that top #1 user wasn't moritz, who is second anyway. Being curious about atcroft, I found this in his home node:

... I currently use the FrameChat2 CB client and often leave it running, which makes me appear to be at console, even when I am not.
Which makes me think that users using CB clients refreshing PM pages automatically (and potentially unattended) are unconciously perverting your stats. Maybe correlating your data with user's writeups would help make them fair to most active users.

You could say that not counting cloaked users doesn't show the whole truth, but I think it's fair enough for everybody. Since you're being cloaked, I don't think you'd like to see any stats that show you're spending too much time on PM ;)
