Pity da foo who misspells Monastery

by benn (Vicar)
on May 06, 2003 at 11:45 UTC ( [id://255847]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Here we go with the pettiest discussion for a long time, but when something bugs ya, it bugs ya...

<rod_up_read_end>

M. o. n. A. s. t. E. r. y. Well - I don't know. I even spotted 'Monestary' in the Offering Plate text last week, so if pmdev do it, what hope is there for monks? :) I actually wondered if it was a pun on 'money', but alas, no.

I *would* suggest a little spellcheck just on the word 'Monestary', with a message similar to 'Pity da foo...title', but I can already see the "load on the server" replies flooding in, so how about just a note in Need Help or an FAQ or something - anything that'd jog the memory when typing. I personally stop as soon as I'm about to type the word 'money' - "the Monastery isn't about capitalism" I tell myself, and backspace. Or "The vowels come in order, except for the 'o'". Or "It's written at the top of the bl**din' page - Monastery Gates" :)

</rod_up_read_end>

I know I know...I even go to the bother of rubbing out surplus apostrophes on chalk boards - sad, isn't it?

Cheers,
Ben.

    I just Super Searched and found eleven occurances occurences of me misspelling monastery. Sheesh! Even my 500th Post was tainted! ;)

    For the record, these days when i need to spell monastery, i just remember that the a and the e are what get confused - so i simply use the fact that (sorting alpha-wise) a comes before e in this case: monastery.

    UPDATE: here is the code as promised. It worked well for my needs, but tweaking will be necessary for your needs. I must admit that i screwed up and lost the content for 79578. I tried to get a copy from http://perlmonks.thepen.com but i was too late. What did i do wrong? I simply used this:

    $agent->field('note_doctext');
    instead of this:
    $agent->field('note_doctext',$textarea);
    Ouch!! Oh well, live and learn. Here is the complete code, and be careful!

    L-LL-L--L-LL-L--L-LL-L--
    -R--R-RR-R--R-RR-R--R-RR
    B--B--B--B--B--B--B--B--
    H---H---H---H---H---H---
    (the triplet paradiddle with high-hat)

      ...as encapsulated by the (now extended) little rhyme...
      When spelling Monastery, you need to know, The vowels are in order, except for the 'o'.
      :) cheers,Ben

    What about this trick:
    1. Scroll To Top Of Page
    2. Look At Links
    3. Find The One That Reads The Monastery Gates

    Ah yes, creativity at its peak.
      ..also noted in my post, and further clarified by the yet-again extended ever-more-ridiculous ditty...
      With "Monastery" spelling, should you need to engage, Look! It's there at the top of the bl**din' page.

      Cheers,Ben.

    The mnemonic I use is to stress the second syllable: "moNASTery". That reminds me that the word is kin to "monastic".

    Of course, that alone won't stop people from writing "monastary"... So just remember "mystery" and/or "stationery".

    The 6th Rule of Perl Club is -- There is no Rule #6.

      I can just imagine the long lines of stationary monks waiting to remember the wrong 'stationery'! :)

      What about the following:
      All monks are focused "on Mastery" of perl?

      Just a thought!

    I prefer to spell it "Monsterary". :)

    rod_up_read_end? I think you need to show us your DTD :) The only way I can parse that is if it were a typo for s/read/rear/... which, come to think of it, is another mnemonic for spelling monasstery correctly :)

      Oops - indeed - another victim of wanton cut'n'paste'n'post'n'then can't edit - rear end it was. Good job I spelt 'Monestary' right...oh damn

    Although I think monestery is appropriate for the offering place - it is asking for money.

    Actually what I hate most about online misspellings is that the misspellings start to look right. I've caught myself typing definately recently. And often I have to look up separate to make sure it's right. Arrgh.

      Could be worse -- you could start talking like the managers, mixing up nouns and verbs and having no clue how to really conjugate something.

      BTW, I hate spelling.

    Heh, heh. I understand. Believe me---I understand. Now I know where that ''a'' from ''seperate'' went. (Have you seen that ''a'' and ''e'' at a party together?) ;) But seriously, why should we worry about such things? Maybe all the time we spent on learning how to spell ''Monastery'' right went into learning how to do really cool stuff with Perl for a few other people. I couldn't care less if they spell ''cat'' wrong, as long as they don't misspell P.E.R.L.

      Yes, like how to use the functions raverse, sorte, and whyl loops.
      I'm just kidding/exaggerating, but spelling is important when coding. Just to widen the scope a little bit...attention to detail is *important* when coding.

      True, it's a simple mistake to posts to an extremely user friendly site, but the subject still made a pretty interesting (fun, in the least) conversation...IMHO.

        =) That's what I was trying to get at with spelling "P.E.R.L." right. I guess your module include would look something like this:

        use English "SpellingChallenged";
        I agree. It's been fun. --

    benn,

    I'm glad your life is so squared away that you've got time enough to worry about how others make spelling mistakes.

    For my own enjoyment, here's a couple of surplus apostrophe's you can't' erase.

    cheers'.

      I'm glad *your* life is so 'squared away' that you've got time to log in, downvote, log out again and post an anonymous unwitty uninformative low-grade gripe at a mild self-deprecating discussion that others appear to be enjoying. Little grumpy today were we? Was it past your bedtime, possibly?

      That cheers thing is a little worrying though - are you perchance the same stalking AM that keeps posting slightly bizarre replies to some of my more 'OT' posts? Help help - I'm being repressed! :)

      Cheers luv.
      Ben.
