Membership pledge drive

by blssu (Pilgrim)
on Oct 25, 2002 at 15:52 UTC ( [id://208057]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

My local public radio stations are all doing the fall fund drive thing, so I thought I'd do the same for perlmonks. I'm doing a "new member challenge". If 10 people each donate US$25 or more before next Friday (Oct 31 11:59pm EST deadline), I'll donate US$250.

I'll be using this statistics page for checking donations. (Let me know if there's a better way to find donation info.)

BTW, the donations have fallen way off lately. What's the deal with that? A bad economy?

Umm, you do know that this is the statistics page tracking kudra's World Domination Fund, right? When we get to the final round and she's battling Dogbert, she may be just a wee bit peeved with you for embezzling the seed money for her dictatorship.

    Cheers,
    Ovid

Thank you for excellent intentions, and I do hope people respond positively.

However, KWDF is activated by a button on jcwren's homenode. To really donate to the Monastery's parent, Yet Another Society, go to their site, or use the Offering Plate here. The Fund Drive Status is probably what you're looking for.

Or did I miss some unusually dry humor?

blssu, I really appreciate your gesture, but I must point out that the page you are looking at is kudra's World Domination Fund, not the perlmonks donation fund. ( Just so you know, I'm not implying that helping kudra dominate the world is a bad thing )

I'm not sure if there is a publicly accessable list but, if you want to do this I'm sure one of the gods would be able to help.

Hey, thanks! I didn't know that. So, how do I know if my challenge is met? Do I need to appeal to the gods? The donation stats on the Offering Plate seem out of date.

Ok, thanks everybody for pointing out my mistake. I didn't intend to match contributions to Kudra's WDF! (I can't update my posting, so if someone would kindly strike the "statistics page" link, I'd appreciate it.)

It looks like there aren't any listings of contribution amounts, so I'm not sure how to cajole people into donating the US$25. The counter is mostly for others to see -- these things are supposed to stir up donations!

YAS has the donations page, but I'm not sure how to read that. I'm trying to help perlmonks, not Perl 6.

I'm trying to help perlmonks, not Perl 6.

Exactly! If there was a mechanism for Helping PerlMonks, the source of so much assistance to me personally, then I would consider it money well spent.

However, making contributions to YAS, an organisation that I have no knowledge of and which I have seen no visible signs of assistance or conribution to PerlMonks goes against the grain.

They may be a wonderful organisation and may be doing sterling work, but if I can't see it, and don't know what it is, I am reluctant to contribute my currently meager funds in that direction when PM has visible needs.

Is there an explaination of what KWDF is for anywhere?

Cor! Like yer ring! ... HALO dammit! ... 'Ave it yer way! Hal-lo, Mister la-de-da. ... Like yer ring!
YAS is perlmonks, at least legally. (Check the footer on all the pages) There should be some sort of perlmonks-specific fund, the same way there's the perl development grant fund and the general fund. It's just a matter of getting someone with some level of authority to set up a separate directed fund so the donations can go there and accumulate until someone with the authority to disburse it can do so.

This'd be something for vroom, tye, or one of the other site gods to do in coordination with the YAS folks.

I think that you have had a very good idea, and I hope you find a way to make it happen.

On a side note, I have had a fantasy for some time that when I win the lottery, I would do something very similar to what you are trying to do here (except on a bigger scale). Unfortunately, in the real world, I am just coming off a several month layoff by taking a job that pays less than the crappy pay I was getting before :-( At least it's a better job!

Pledge drive update from YAS
by blssu (Pilgrim) on Oct 28, 2002 at 21:58 UTC

Great news from Kurt DeMaagd at YAS! He was listed as the financial contact on the YAS donations page, so I sent him a note. He gave me permission to post his reply here.

    Kurt DeMaagd wrote:

Excellent idea. We do track the donations, but that donation page is horribly out of date. Now all of the donations get grouped in with the general YAS donations. I could change the donation system to specifically track that. That would probably also address some of the concerns expressed in the discussion about giving to this faceless entity called YAS.

So, here's my counter-proposal. Give me a week to make some revisions to our system. Then we (and you) can specifically track the progress. Then next week we could go forward with your challenge.

    Subject: perlmonks membership challenge proposal

I'd like to offer US$250 for a perlmonks donation
challenge. Originally I thought that this would be
pretty simple, but <laughs at self> the page I thought
was perlmonks donation history turned out to be
    something else entirely. (Look at
    http://perlmonks.org/index.pl?node_id=208057 for
    the details.)

My idea was that if 10 or more people donated US$25
each to perlmonks by Oct 31, I'd donate US$250.

Is there any way you can help me do this? If it
works well, perhaps you could solicit other people
    to put up other challenges.

If you aren't the right person to talk to, could
you please forward this in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    - Ken
