In today's silicon times, where microprocessors routinely execute tens-of-millions of (overlapped, parallelized ...) instructions per second, if you are experiencing "human(!)-perceptible slowdowns," please do not waste your time blaming it on "variant type conversions." Your root-cause problem is very obviously "your algorithms" ... and, furthermore, "it must involve something-or-other that is mechanical." Networking, file access, something. The only way to find it out is by empirical measure: profiling.
