Another fun article from IBM DeveloperWorks, Make incoming e-mail play custom tunes, Compose and blend sounds based on sender and content.

"You've got mail" is so 20th century. Use Perl and Sound eXchange (SoX) to play sound files on your Linux® or Windows® computer based on the content of incoming e-mail messages. Your system can compose and blend certain sounds to give you a heads-up on the who, what, and why of your in-box content."

Yet another quirky way to use Perl to spice up your desktop :)

I can visualize Catbert and his HR minions using this for evil ... imagine an e-mail to employees selected for downsizing that plays the Jaws theme.

Perhaps a sample from The Monty Python Spam sketch for SPAM

I predict the queue of sound files to play would overflow the memory in short order.
